The Class of 1994 - BostonCard - 12-28-2014

The New York Times had a big piece about the Stanford Class of 1994.  It's part of a broader message about women in technology.

That's my class, and I knew (but wasn't friends with) several people mentioned in the article.  I thought it was a very strange piece, and I'm not sure what the point was.

My class as well.  I got a call from the reporter, which I gladly took because I think she's done excellent reporting before.  Unfortunately that's not the case here.  Based on the direction of her questions, it was obvious that she had formed a thesis for the piece and was on the hunt for corroborating quotes.  First, in my experience, I didn't find that The Man tried to keep us minorities in the Valley down.  Second, I also told her the greatest accomplishment in the Class of 94 belongs to David Shaw.  Stanford tech zillionaires are a dime a dozen.  Winning a Rose Bowl for Stanford.  Until he did it, I didn't think it was possible.

That was my class as well and I agree that it was a strange piece.  I think it originally was supposed to be about our class being pioneers of the Internet but that really wasn't the case. We have some success stories but no more than any other class from that era in my opinion.  No one went into an Internet company upon graduation because they didn't exist. Whereas, everyone in the class of 97 did.

Wow so many '94 folks here. Kitch was one of my fraternity brothers. I look at this piece and am unsure of the goal, but it is nice to see the moves many more willing and able than I took with their futures.

I was Symbolic Systems, '93, so I knew some of these folks.

I had completely forgotten about the Donner incident and the birth of the Stanford Review. And I was in Donner the year before ('89-'90).

There are so many different stories that could be told of the early 90s Stanford classes and its graduates. This is not one I would have guessed.
