This week in opponents non-attrition - BostonCard - 12-28-2014

Looks like Cody Kessler will be back at USC next year:

I think Nelson Agholor and J Allen are thought to be leaning towards leaving, but the Trojans have a lot of young guys coming back.

They always do.  Just like they will bring in a bunch more on signing day.  A monkey could coach USC to 8-4 in any given year.

I love what my 87 year-old, sort-of-mother-in-law said about USC in September.  Because her four children each attended one of the four California Pac-12 teams, I asked who she rooted for when SC played Stanford.

In her tiny voice, quieted even more by her Parkinson's, she responded almost immediately.  "SC," she said, "is not a real school."

I think of that every time I think of Sarkasian.  Fortunately for us, Sarkasian is not a real coach.  Their bowl game loo ked like the biggest squandering of talent since Ishtar.

ouch. ( He's a cruel man...but fair.)

The Fightin Ishtars loose Leonard Williams to the NFL - BostonCard - 12-29-2014

This was expected, but Leonard Williams has declared for the pros.

WRT the comment that a monkey could coach USC to an 8-4 season, Lane Kiffin coached the Trojans to 8-5 and 7-6 seasons sandwhiched around a 10-2 season, culminating with a 3-2 record his fourth year during which he was fired.  The 35-21 28-15 record (winning percentage of 62.5%65.1%) is actually slightly worse than an 8-4 season average (winning percentage of 66.7%).

EDIT: Oops, I was actually quoting his all-time college head coaching record, which included a 7-6 season at Tennessee.  But that doesn't change the conclusion that he failed to beat the mark that a monkey was posited to be able to reach.

Keeping him tied to a chair in the Athletic Department would probably have been some sort of violation.

Let me clarify...  A monkey could coach an 85 scholarship USC team to 8-4.  It takes scholarship reductions and other punishments to weaken that program now that TV forces want it to succeed so badly and there is still no NFL team in L.A.
