Stanford vs. Maryland statistics -
terry - 12-29-2014
I compiled these stats for my own amusement, but I figured as long as I have them, I might as well post them. This is an expanded version of some stats I posted a few weeks ago.
Offense:
                      Maryland Stanford
Points per game           29.1     25.7
Rushing yards/game       130.6    154.8
Rushing yards/attempt       3.9      4.3
Rush yds/att excl. sacks      4.7      4.9
Passing yards/game       221.5     231.7
Passing yards/attempt       6.8       7.8
Pass efficiency rating      121.0     142.8
Completion pct.           54.8%    64.5%
Total offense yards/game   352.1     386.5
Yards per play             5.3       5.9
3rd down conversion pct.     32%      41%
Sacks allowed             31        22
Pass att/sack allowed       12.6      16.1
Field goals              18-19     14-20
Red zone scoring pct.        91%      71%
Red zone TD pct.           67%      51%
Stanford has the edge in every category except points per game and red zone performance. Maryland has a weak offense -- they are ranked #106 in total offense, #102 in rushing offense, and #77 in passing efficiency. Stanford's defense has been dominating teams with offenses like Maryland's.
As a point of reference, Stanford is ranked #77 in total offense, #73 in rushing offense, and #33 in passing efficiency.
Rushing:
                     Att  Yds  Avg  TDs
Maryland:
#16 C.J. Brown, QBÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â 148Â Â 569Â Â 3.8Â Â 7
#45 Brandon Ross, RBÂ Â Â Â Â Â 77Â Â 387Â Â 5.0Â Â 4
#4 Wes Brown, RBÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 97Â Â 341Â Â 3.5Â Â 5
Stanford:
#22 Remound Wright, RBÂ Â Â 127Â Â 552Â Â 4.3Â Â Â 8
#39 Kelsey Young, RBÂ Â Â Â Â Â 57Â Â 306Â Â 5.4Â Â Â 0
#26 Barry Sanders, RBÂ Â Â Â Â 54Â Â 304Â Â 5.6Â Â Â 0
#8 Kevin Hogan, QBÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â 84Â Â 245Â Â 2.9Â Â Â 5
#27 Christian McCaffrey, RBÂ Â 35Â Â 243Â Â 6.9Â Â Â 0
Maryland's leading rusher, by far, is the quarterback, C.J. Brown. He carries the ball about 10 times per game, not counting sacks. We need to contain him.
Passing:
Comp-Att  Yds Yds/Att  Pct.   TD Int  Rtg.
#16 C.J. Brown, Mary.  174-327  2083  6.4  53.2%  13  9  114.3
#8 Kevin Hogan, Stan. 218-332  2603  7.8  65.7%  17  8  143.6
C.J. Brown, who is a 6th year senior, has about the same number of pass attempts as Hogan, but Brown's stats are inferior in every respect. Based on the numbers, this guy is not a very good passer. I would be surprised to see him have a big game against our pass defense, which is quite good.
Receiving:
                   Rec.  Yds  Avg  TD
Maryland:
#1 Stefon Diggs, WRÂ Â Â Â 52Â Â Â Â 654Â Â 12.6Â Â 5
#6 Deon Long, WRÂ Â Â Â Â 49Â Â Â Â 554Â Â 11.3Â Â 2
#82 Marcus Leak, WRÂ Â Â 20Â Â Â 297Â Â 14.9Â Â 3
#4 Wes Brown, RBÂ Â Â Â Â 20Â Â Â 184Â Â Â 9.2Â Â 0
#34 Jacquille Veii, WRÂ Â Â 16Â Â Â 230Â Â 14.4Â Â 1
Stanford:
#7 Ty Montgomery, WRÂ Â 61Â Â Â 604Â Â Â 9.9Â Â Â 3
#84 Austin Hooper, TEÂ Â 35Â Â Â 428Â Â 12.2Â Â Â 2
#89 Devon Cajuste, WRÂ 30Â Â Â 510Â Â 17.0Â Â Â 4
#3 Michael Rector, WRÂ Â 23Â Â Â 309Â Â 13.4Â Â Â 2
#27 C. McCaffrey, RBÂ Â Â 16Â Â Â Â 251Â Â 15.7Â Â Â 2
Maryland's top receiver, Stefon Diggs, is a playmaker. He compiled his stats in 9 games, missing time due to injury. I expect that Maryland will try to get the ball in his hands a lot.

Defense:
                            Maryland  Stanford
Points allowed per game            28.9     16.0
Rushing yards/game allowed        201.6    111.8
Rushing yards/attempt allowed        4.5      3.2
Rush yds/att allowed excl. sacks       5.2      4.4
Passing yards/game allowed        236.5    175.7
Passing yards/attempt allowed        6.6      5.2
Opponent pass efficiency rating     119.0     105.4
Opponent completion pct.          54.7%    57.1%
Total yards/game allowed          438.1     287.4
Yards per play allowed              5.4       4.2
Opp. 3rd down conversion pct.        39%     36%
Sacks                          31       40
Opp. pass att/sack               13.9      10.1
Stanford has the advantage is every major defensive category. Statistically, Maryland's defense is not good. Maryland is ranked #95 in total defense and #98 in rushing defense. They do have a good #37 ranking in passing efficiency defense. But Stanford should be able to run the ball on these guys, so their pass defense may not matter a lot.
In comparison, Stanford is ranked #4 in total defense, #11 in rushing defense, and #8 in passing efficiency defense.
Top tacklers:
                  Tackles TFL Sacks Int
Maryland:
#47 Cole Farrand, ILBÂ Â Â 111Â Â 5.0Â Â Â Â 0Â Â Â 0
#21 Sean Davis, SÂ Â Â Â Â 108Â Â 4.0Â Â 1.0Â Â Â 0
#53 L.A. Goree, ILBÂ Â Â Â Â 90Â Â 2.0Â Â Â Â 0Â Â Â 0
#4 Will Likely, CBÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â 76Â Â 4.0Â Â 1.0Â Â Â 6
#93 Andre Monroe, DEÂ Â Â 56Â 12.0Â Â 9.5Â Â Â 0
Stanford:
#4 Blake Martinez, ILBÂ Â Â 96Â Â 6.0Â Â 4.5Â Â Â Â 3
#17 A.J. Tarpley, ILBÂ Â Â Â Â 77Â Â 4.5Â Â 2.0Â Â Â Â 1
#8 Jordan Richards, SÂ Â Â Â 76Â Â 2.5Â Â Â Â 0Â Â Â Â 3
#91 Henry Anderson, DEÂ Â 62Â 14.0Â Â 7.5Â Â Â Â 0
#48 Kevin Anderson, OLBÂ 50Â 11.0Â Â Â 5.0Â Â Â Â 0
The playmakers on the Maryland defense are Will Likely (6 interceptions) and Andre Monroe (9.5 sacks). They have put up some good numbers on a defense that isn't very good overall.
Punt returns:
                     Ret. Avg. TD
#4 Will Likely, Mary.       19  11.5  1
#7 Ty Montgomery, Stan    12  19.8  2
Kickoff returns:
                    Ret.  Avg. TD
#1 Stefon Diggs, Mary.    20  23.9  0
#4 Will Likely, Mary.      12  28.0  0
#7 Ty Montgomery, Stan.  17  25.2  0
Will Likely and Stefon Diggs are dangerous returners. With Ty Montgomery out, Maryland probably has the advantage in the return game. Good kick coverage by Stanford will be important.

I'm surprised to see that Blake Martinez leads A.J. Tarpley in tackles, by plenty. I hadn't been following this very closely.

Terry, thanks for the stats. McCaffrey still gives us a strong threat in the return game.

Pretty much statistical domination--holding them below most of their averages and exceeding our averages. Good call on Will Likely's return game--that TD kind of irked me. Jordan Williamson didn't attempt a tackle--only a trip. Sigh.

Actually, at the point where Likely scored his TD, the game was a foregone conclusion (I think it was 42-7 at that point), and it was the fourth quarter. I was happy to concede that one. And man, Likely can fly.

Nothing better than to watch an artfully executed opponent's TD that will never matter :)
