WBBall Pac-12: UW 70 and #5 TA&M 49 - Griffins78 - 12-29-2014

Washington is blowing out No. 5 ranked Texas A&M. The Pac-12 is finally deep and knocking off top nationally ranked teams in Women's Basketball this year. Kelsey Plum is the leading scorer in the country.

Washington beat us last year in Seattle when we had Chiney.  Plum had 23 against us.  I do not remember if it was mainly Lili or Amber who guarded her.  The problem is that Jazmine Davis is excellent, too, and so we need two terrific perimeter defenders just to keep them from scoring 30 each.  Then in the second game when we got them here, Tara changed things a bit and we won.  Bri Roberson and Karlie each got more minutes I think in an effort to keep our guards fresh.  Plum still got 21 off us.

What is impressive about Plum's performance tonight is not just the 32 points but that she got them against one of the best perimeter defenses in the country.  If anyone has the guards to stay with Plum you would think it was A&M.

Yes, the Pac 12 is a vastly improved conference over just a few years ago.  Oregon State and Washington have each now proven they can beat top 10 teams.  Arizona State is 11-1 and gave Northwestern its only loss, which in turn beat two ranked teams.  Washington State, C.al if it ever gets healthy,  and U.SC all look like threats.

Sagarin has the Pac 12 RPI like this:
Oregon State 14
Arizona State 15
Washington 17
Stanford 27
Washington State 32
U.SC 44
C.al 47
UCLA 75
Colorado 81
Oregon 160
Utah 172
Arizona 197

If that were to hold up perfectly, the Pac 12 could have 6-7 teams in the NCAAs.  Of course it won't.

Also note that for Stanford to host the NCAAs and get the first two rounds at home, we need to improve our RPI a whole bunch.  Tara mentioned RPI yesterday--the first time I remember her doing that.  Fortunately, there are three Pac 12 teams ranked higher than we are which means we have a lot of opportunity to improve our RPI.  But we may need to run the Pac 12 table to wind up with a 4 seed.  I would not rule that out--but the games at Washington, at Washington State in a couple of weeks, and at Oregon State later loom very, very large.
