Departures thread - pcgoode - 12-31-2014

It gives me no pleasure starting this thread, but Alex Carter is apparently declaring for the draft. Big loss, especially if Lyons also leaves.

This was tweeted about Hogan this morning:

@Emilnem: Also, early sources say that Kevin Hogan will be leaving #Stanford for the #NFL.

Re: Departures thread - StanFan88 - 12-31-2014

I think Carter could be a lock for first round with another year of Akina's voodoo magic but he will be drafted.  Wish him luck and hope he comes back to finish his degree at some point.

I don't think Hogan gets drafted for one reason - he's shown that he's not a QB who can read defenses.  He may have the size, strength, etc. but if you can't find your second & third options quickly you can't be an NFL QB.

I think Cajuste & Peat are both gone.  Peat is a first-rounder and Cajuste played his way onto someone's roster last night.

Re: Departures thread - needle - 12-31-2014

Some Twitter chatter that Hogan might go to Michigan. That would shock me.

I thought Mike Mayock said Stanford didn't have anybody on defense who would go higher than the 3rd round.

This would be a stunning indictment of the program. I hope that's unfounded. Hard to believe.

QBs like this do get drafted often, even though they may not work out.  Logan Thomas is the most recent example to come to mind.  He was drafted by Arizona in the 4th round since he has arm strength, size and athleticism, despite no ability to read a defense and very poor accuracy.  Jake Locker got drafted in the 1st round despite accuracy issues and a perceived inability to read a defense.

I think Hogan will be picked between the 3-5th round if he declares.  I don't know how much he improves that if he stays except for the fact that there may be less competition for the top QB spots in the draft (Kessler, Connor Cook, Hackenberg, Hundley - none of which are top-10 quality picks at this point).

I assume you mean someone other than Hundley since he's going drafting this year.

This article says that Hogan's gone but doesn't back it up with anything: http://collegefootball.scout.com/story/1496990-5-thoughts-on-the-foster-farms-bowl

Given the way it is phrased, that seems to me like someone read the published depth chart, saw that Hogan was a senior and stopped there. That's reinforced by the following sentence that claimed, "Top targets Ty Montgomery and Devon Cajuste are finished along with three of the top four leading rushers needing to be replaced".

EDIT - I have also heard that Carter is likely to be off (rumour), but perhaps pcgoode could tell us why "Alex Carter is apparently declaring for the draft" - I assume that was published somewhere?

Re: Departures thread - Hank 91 - 12-31-2014

Lombardi tweeted last night that Carter said to him, "This [game] might be it." So there's that.

As for the other guys, what about this. What if Hogan, Peat, and Cajuste get together and say, "Geez, that was pretty fun last night. I think our offense could be like that all season long now that we've finally got things figured out. Why don't we come back and win a national championship?"

A guy can dream, right?

Quote: Briefly: Junior cornerback Alex Carter said he will enter the NFL draft. “I talked it over with my family, and we decided it’s time,” he said. “I love these boys. It was great playing with them, and I’ll miss them.” ... Cajuste may leave too. He said he will announce his decision Wednesday

Sure can. That's the hope. Cajuste said he'll tell us his decision today so we'll at least know that one soon.

Well, that's disappointing, but at least defensive back is an area of strength.

Carter, perhaps along with Peat, will be our first Juniors to leave for the NFL in a long time - perhaps since Teyo Johnson?
It's fine, but I am a little sad over that.

Of the departures, Carter would seem to cause the most trouble - along with Hogan if he goes.

I won't rule anything out, and I don't have any inside knowledge so I won't speculate.  We will know more in the coming few days.  Meanwhile, I'm going to revel in the great finish to an otherwise disappointing season and hope that it is an indication of what is to come in 2015, regardless of which players are still around.

Thomas Keiser left after the 2010 season with a year of eligibility.  Looks like he is playing in the Arena Football League now.

Of the early departures? He's the only one so far, but of the possible ones I think it's something like Hogan, Peat, Carter, Cajuste. As long as we keep Akina I think our secondary will be okay, we've been recruiting so well some of those guys have to be able to play.

Lots of guys have left with eligibility remaining. Not many have left before completing 4 years at Stanford.

I wouldn't put Peat as high. We will still be returning 4 of 5 linemen, and seem to have a replacement on the way in Tucker.
On the other hand, we could lose our entire starting defensive backfield, and even if the frosh will be great (which we cannot know yet), they won't be experienced.
And anyway, at least as far as 2014 production goes, imo Carter was severely under-appreciated by the talking heads while Peat possibly over-appreciated.

Well, he did play in the NFL on and off for the past four years. He was with Arizona up through week 10 this year.
