Ironic statement of the day - BostonCard - 01-02-2015

[qupte]OHIO STATE (plus-9) vs. ALABAMA (Sugar Bowl, Jan. 1): After downgrading the B1G all season (based largely on miserable non-conference results) … and after railing against Ohio State’s inclusion in the playoff (TCU was far more deserving) … I won’t reverse course now. Good chance the selection committee looks foolish before the third quarter ends. Pick: Alabama.

As Yogi Berra once said, "Predictions are hard, especially about the future."  Of course, in retrospect the committee looks pretty wise; Wilner, less so.

I dunno about wise, but the committee wasn't wrong to include Ohio State--but if they ranked Bama #1 and Ohio State #4, then their judgment was a little off.  The gap between Oregon and FSU was far greater, and that had the feel of a #1 vs. #25 game.  Then again, maybe TCU isn't that great, and Ole Miss happens to be a very mediocre $EC team.

Wilner also said take the points and FSU, so he is 0-2 in playoff games. Can't really fault him though, because that is what I would have done.

Really?  I would have picked Bama to expose the third string QB in the SEC's bowl.  However, I never thought FSU would hang with Oregon in the Pac-12's bowl.  ACC was too weak and the Pac-12 was too good.  Both teams played better in the second half over the season.  FSU's rallies seemed more like luck.  Oregon's rallies were a function of scheme and conditioning.  My only concern for Oregon was that perhaps the CFP TV timeouts would allow FSU to physically recover between each series.

I think Wilner was OK with his Pac-12 bowl predictions so far, not great though.

I think over the season Wilner has been close to awful with his picks.  His love affair with the SEC certainly wouldn't have helped him see those SEC "upsets".
