Their defensive losses make ours look comparatively minor.

In a general way, I don't buy into the belief
we are ennobled by dangerous opponents. They are losing so much talent that maybe having Shaq around wouldn't have helped them, but since he's going, I say, good luck and have a good trip.

Backup QB Troy Williams is also transferring to a JC.

So, what are their defensive losses?
Remember ours could include as many as 8 starters (all but K Anderson, Martinez, and Harris) along with a couple of major contributors (Lyons, Olugbode).

The Huskies lose All Pac 12 DL Danny Shelton and All American DL/DE Ha'oli Kikaha, plus All American LB Shaq Thompson, and second team (I think) all Pac 12 CB Marcus Peters, plus the two Hudsons on the DL--one HM all conference--and HM LB John Timu, a three-year starter iirc. Looks brutal for them.

This is supposed to be their depth chart for their bowl game.

It would seem that they lose 6 starters, all in the front 7.
I think that Marcus Peters was kicked off the team awhile ago?

Interestingly, this year the huskies started almost all frost and sophomores in the backfield. Next year, they will have an almost all new front 7.

A career is like rock climbing. Sometimes you have to go down to go back up.

Thompson is one of the guys who decommitted from kal when Tosh Lupoi left. He said he felt he would get a better education at Washington. That wasn't all that unreasonable given kal's football APR and graduation rates. However, now he's leaving school without a degree....

Doesn't mean it wasn't a better education.

Low APR doesn't mean the education at an institution is necessarily bad, just that the athletes are not taking advantage of whatever is available to them. I'm not sure where Washington stands in relation to Cal in terms of academics, but it really comes down to what Shaq wanted to put into his education.

Perhaps he was just after an education in football. Since Lupoi is no longer at UW, maybe he thought he'd learned enough.

Next season, the loss of Tosh is going to show at UW. Shaq was the biggest of the big recruits of his time there, the #1 or #2 safety prospect in the country. Over the last two years, they will have lost Seferian-Jenkins, Sankey, Kasen Williams, and now Shelton, Kikaha, Shaq and Peters. Peterson and his UW staff show no signs they can recruit near that level.
We still will have to face guys like those, of course. But they'll be in UCLA, Cal, and Oregon uniforms now.

Petersen showed at Boise State that he can take somewhat middling talent and, at least on a given day, compete with just about anyone.
The $64 question,of course, is whether he will able to do it on a week to week basis against Pac-12 level competition.
If he shows he can, I think Husky recruiting will pick up. Until then, it will definitely help our recruiting in the Pacific Northwest.

We all hear about Chris Peterson's genius, but Boise State seemed to outperform its talent this season, too. Perhaps the blue field and the notoriety attract better players than we have assumed for all these years. And Peterson made some baffling decisions this year, including against us.Â
And shouldn't the Huskies, with all that talent on defense, have done a little better this year? Not sure.

I wondered about that, maybe now that he's on the big stage and not a perpetual underdog he doesn't feel like he can gamble. But watching that game against OKST was infuriating, how many times did he punt on 4th and short from the middle of the field? At least two. Even Shaw was going for those in his bowl game, why the hell wasn't Petersen? It's like the mojo came from that blue field or something.
Re: Today in opponent attrition: Huskie edition -
washingtonismoney - 01-06-2015
People tend to be more conservative with bad teams -- they fear the risk more. Shaw was going for it on fourth down, but I suspect that was more effect than cause: he'd already gotten a good offense together and felt comfortable gambling. But early in the season Shaw unleashed some of the worst punts we've seen from any team this year. Why? Well, it's harder to visualize success when you know there might be a botched snap or bogus clipping penalty or something. That makes you conservative.
Pure Matthew Effect, really.

When your OL is shoving around the DL with some regularity, you can do just about anything.

WIM, you are absolutely right, of course. But it turns out that if you are trying to maximize your chance of winning, you should go for the higher beta (I'm using beta in the financial sense, to mean risk) strategy with an inferior team, and the lower beta strategy with superior teams.
