Foster Farms Bowl Question -
Hank 91 - 01-05-2015
I know it was a week ago, but I've got a question about a play from the bowl game. On Devon Cajuste's second touchdown (10:18 in the third quarter, 2:05 into the game if you've still got it on your DVR), the Cardinal came out in a formation I don't remember seeing from them before. Split out wide to the left (on the very bottom of the screen) was offensive lineman David Bright, all 300 pounds of him. On Hogan's snap, Bright drove hard, as if he expected to get the ball. Hogan never looked in his direction, though, and fired the strike to Cajuste for the touchdown. So two questions:
1. Does anyone remember seeing this before?
2. For any who were in attendance and might remember noticing, did this look like a legitimate formation, i.e., something they could've run out of, maybe with Bright as a lead blocker on the outside?

I, too, have a FF Bowl question. Anyone know if and/or when it might get shown again? I wasn't able to DVR it remotely.

You can still watch the game on ESPN3 (if you get it). I think this is the link straight to the game. I think they keep things up for a week, so it will expire soon.

You also might want to check your local listings, as they say. I noticed last night that ESPN is showing bowl games on a loop through the night, and not just the good ones. I don't know if ours will be shown again, but it's worth a look.

I just saw the play on the ESPN3; I don't remember anything like that this year, but in 2010, we threw to James McGillicuddy at least once (he recorded 1 reception for three yards).
This year, in the UW-OSU Cactus Bowl game, Ok State Defensive Tackle James Castleman had a 1 yard touchdown run and a 48-yard catch and rumble out of the backfield.

I think (but am unsure) that anyone can get replays on ESPN3.
They leave up games for random amounts of time. Here's a search for Stanford on the replays.

It's a little hard to figure out what's the oldest, as they list events by month and day but not year. But both Rose Bowls are still up.
There is also this previous thread linking to the DailyMotion version of the game in HD, thanks to ChicagoVisitor.

I don't remember seeing this before. As far as I can remmeber (dimly) McGillicudy went out in routes very occasionally from an inline TE spot. Bright was split out wide.
Not sure that my attendance helps me answer your other question in any way, but I assume that we were trying to confuse Maryland with our personnel and formation. Of course we could have Bright block on the outside, but he was definitely charging down the field on some kind of route. The cornerback went with him and I am not sure I want to see him test his ball skills vs a cb - but it might be something to keep an eye out for next year.

My guess is close to CTcard's, I think it's misdirection, but I think the main goal is to get them to think reverse/jet sweep/screen, something to get the defense in the mindset that the play is going that way. Having him run a route is probably part of selling that, they likely expect him to block downfield.
I'd actually like to see that play, it seems like a fun wrinkle. Even more fun to run it that way, then have Bright release and throw him the ball if he's uncovered.

With four quality TEs on the roster next year, I want to see Stanford go trips with three of them on one side, and run a bubble screen. Let some 6-foot nothing 180 lb DB try to get around Cotton, and if he does, try to bring down Hooper, Schultz, or Taboada.

They installed, but never used, that formation before UCLA. Just a decoy to see if a linebacker walked out to cover.
