I'm sure the fact that ND played them and lost has nothing to do with this assessment. For some good laughs ...and to appreciate Shaw...you all should check out one of the ND free sites: Rock's House at NDNation. There's the usual delusional thinking mixed with an infinitesimal pinch of reality as well as a healthy dose of Kelly hatred, which I endorse.

I think I'll change my sig line.

I heard several people say the same on ESPN radio today.

I haven't watched FSU play enough to be sure what I think - but remember that football intelligence is not the same thing as academic intelligence or even sanity.

Mariota sure seems like a better overall qb to me, but Winston plays in a more pro-friendly offense.

I'm really curious about this line of reasoning, what does FSU's offense require Winston to do that Oregon's doesn't require of Mariota? I sure didn't notice anything.

I still think that Winston's main problem was that FSU's a horrible environment and that if he ends up in a decent situation he won't be a constant fuckup in the same way that he was at FSU, but who knows if that'll actually happen. I guess we'll see.

We should not forget that our David Shaw has given Mr. Winston high praise in the past, even after losing him to FSU, nor that Mr. Winston led his team to two straight unbeaten regular seasons, with a schedule not significantly different in quality than our own.  Yes has has done some very stupid things at Talahassee, but these things were socially related, not football-wise.  Kelly is right, IMHO.  If I were an NFL GM I'd pick Winston over Mariotta.  Over the long term he has much more potential than Mr. M.

Unless that potential is curtailed by off-the-field issues.  Players represent investments.

Winston takes snaps under center.
Winston takes 3,5,7 step drops.
Winston makes some play selection at the line of scrimmage.

Mariota does none of the first, basically none of the second, and only a little of the third.

Very true, Mr. F.  It's also true that most young men significantly mature (physically and socially) in the 21-25 year old cohort.  If Mr. W matures socially, he will be a superstar.  Mr. M has already maxed out his physical and social capabilities (IMVHO).  Good luck to the both of them.

Do the first two things matter at all? I can't imagine that's very hard to teach to someone of Mariota's caliber. And I'd personally be surprised if Winston's play-selection responsibilities were significantly higher than Mariota's.
