Just watched old David Feherty interview w/ Michelle Wie -

She refers to (and Feherty demonstrates) an old Stanford tradition - fountain hopping?!?
That is one that never came to my attention. Were there other obscure, or not so obscure, traditions that might be shareable? I'm wondering how sheltered I may have been during my years at the Farm. I am presuming that midnight runs (literally and figuratively) for Breakfast Jacks and greasy tacos does not really count. Or, at least, it doesn't count for most of you. For me, it was a core tradition, just slightly less revered than the Axe.

CornFed - Fountain Hopping was indeed part of the Stanford Bucket List, when I was on campus in the late 90's. If you were a part of the band, you pretty much checked it off with most rallies as you gathered the students from dorm to dorm.
The tradition I regret not participating in was going steam tunneling. My wife did lots of exploring in the steam tunnels but I'm a big guy and fairly claustrophobic, so I was not going down there.

I'm sort of an early 70's guy. Was fountain hopping going on back then? CI? Garvin? ferrari? Frankly, I'm shocked I didn't hear about it if it was. If I'd have heard of it, I would have loved to participate. Although the Feherty piece indicated the temperature of the water in one of the fountains was 49 degrees. Is that right? That is life-threatening in my estimation.

Did lots of fountain hopping during my time in the 80s, especially after a hot afternoon football game:
1 - Mem Fountain
2 - Hoop
3 - Claw
4 - Old Union

I wish I'd gone steam tunneling as well. Still haven't made it up to the Hoover Tower observation deck. But I did spend one sunrise on the roof of the Packard building (and countless other sunrises with the rowing team in the Port of Redwood City's waters).

I fountain hopped the end of every spring term before going home. I did some steam tunneling in the etc. as well. My personal tradition was to climb the Gates of Hell in the Rodin sculpture garden after finals every term my senior year.

In the early 80s we would throw our friends into The Claw on their birthday. We also dipped into the fountain in front of Green during hot days when studying on the lawn. Members of the band were the only dedicated fountain hoppers at the time, but people started following them around campus and jumping in with them. I think that is where the more wide-spread fountain hopping began. Actually went into the steam tunnels once but didn't make it very far because there was a large tangle of pipes in our way and I couldn't see a thing through my pre-cool nerd nation glasses. 8)

Wow, fountain hopping was incredibly common in my day.
In fact, if you go any random hot spring day in front of the bookstore, I'll bet you'll see a bunch of people just floating around in the fountain.

Never heard of fountain hopping either. Must have started after I graduated. Midnight Jack's runs were good - I loved the greasy tacos. In addition to the Big Game bonfire, I remember we followed the band around the streets of SF.

I didn't even know we had fountains. I thought those things were just sculptures. ;)
Seriously, I've only seen them on once and that was during a post graduation visit.

As of the my time (late 2000s), fountain hopping was a very common occurrence (yes it is exactly what it sounds like). Steam tunneling was still done, but less widespread. Full moon on the quad is now a full on makeout fest with live music, sexual health education, and people checking ids to get into the quad. They did try to cancel it during the h1n1 outbreak, I'll give you one guess as to how wel that worked. Other traditions that come to mind: band run, secret snowflake (secret Santa where you complete public dares to earn your present), gaieties, etc.

The march started in Union Square (or maybe Fisherman's Wharf?) and ended outside one of the clubs. One of the women would come out and dance to the final number, her top coming off in the process, get arrested, and promptly get bailed out, all of it while newspaper photographers snapped away.
It was Carol Doda at her finest, garvin. I had my younger brother visiting for one of those gala strolls around the city with the band. He was a ninth grader, I believe, and was quite impressed when she took off her top. More so the case, I suppose, since the internet had not become widely-accessible. :P

In 82' the rally started at the top of Nob Hill and wound its way without police escort through the streets down to the Aquatic Park. No Broadway, Carol Doda, or strippers, but we did go to Broadway for Basque food and drink after the rally. I think it was 83' when some nutjob drove into the crowd when we clogged up the streets down near the Aquatic Park. Because of the incident, my Jr. & Sr. years they made everybody take buses up to the Embarcadero for a short, lame, police-controlled march along a few blocks of Fisherman's Wharf to the Aquatic Park. I celebrated by twisting my ankle in a streetcar track and getting a ride to the Kaiser Emergency Room. That is when I learned the dangers of attending a Big Game rally sober.Â
Cheers,

To the best of my memory, you're a year off on the nutjob incident - that was fall of 1982, my freshman year. That SF rally was a real highlight that made the lack over the ensuing years sad.
But, I am not all that confident I got the year straight either.
