Stanford could use a graduate transfer in the other direction. I wonder if there is a 5th year nose tackle out there who wants more playing time and boasts a solid gpa.
Good. Good for him and good for us, I guess - Redrum - 01-18-2015
Reihner never developed into a starter for us. Now he can play close to home and get a graduate degree partially paid for. Whether we are recruiting a better OL to replace him or even getting enough OL in the development system to replace him are larger topics. It looks like we are not going to use all of this year's "available" scholarships.

Happy for him that he got his degree and I hope he finds somewhere that he can get time on the field if that's what he wants.

Good for him, for all the reasons noted on this thread. Good for us to have one more scholarship to play with, either to give to a deserving walk-on, or perhaps use for a last-minute recruit.

Did I miss his name among those who have been discussed as possible transfers? What I think is interesting is his statement that he always wanted to play for PSU. Nonetheless, he came to Stanford to get his degree. It is somewhat hard to fathom that he might not have had the option to go to Penn State originally; possible, but not likely. So I take it as an indication about how highly he values the Stanford degree (appropriately).

According to the ESPN data base for the
2001 2011 recruiting class Reihner did not have an offer from Penn State.

How quickly we forget -- the 2011 class was recruited before the Penn State scandal hit, and while it was unknown if the new improved Stanford football had any lasting traction (Harbaugh left during that recruiting cycle). It was much harder to get a Penn State football scholarship than a Stanford football scholarship at that point. I'm not sure he was making a 40 year decision then -- seems like he's a guy who really wants to play. Ironic that it is now easier for him to see himself starting at Penn State than Stanford. For most of my life that would be hard to believe.

Think his dad played at Penn St. When Reihner committed to Stanford our OL was pushing opponents around and our running game was dominant and getting great media props. Stanford looked like a place that made playing OL fun (fun for OL players is imposing the unit's will on defenses) and it looked like a place that emphasized
developing OL and had the staff to do it. Reihner, for whatever reason, never broke into the starting lineup. Might have been the guys ahead of him were just better or he was slower to develop. But finally he's got the chance to give it one more shot at playing time, close to home with his parents in the stands. Throw in graduate work paid for by PSU...what's not to like?

It was much harder to get a Penn State football scholarship than a Stanford football scholarship at that point.Â
By the Scout rankings, in 2011 Stanford had the #23 ranked class and Penn State had the #34 ranked class. I am sure other services differed, but probably it was not
much harder to get a Penn State football scholarship overall at that point.
However, Penn State did sign 5 OL in that class. Stanford signed 2. So it might have been easier to get a scholarship to Stanford as an OL in 2011.

He leaves with a Stanford degree in hand. He's already won.

Best explained by the fact that he was only 7 years old then.

Thank you for pointing that out, I have altered the original.
