I'm guessing that garvin, and maybe other Boarders, knew/know "Tolley". He was friends with several LSJUMB members when I was there. He had just started his "competition" with Jim Lampley at ABC Sports [needless to say, Jim Lampley ended up "winning" that talent hunt] On at least one occasion [I think it was at one of the pre-season Penn State games to which the Band had travelled], he was doing sideline color commentary and came up to do interviews with Band members during the game. Back in the early '70's, getting on network TV was a pretty big deal...
I haven't kept up with him over the years, but it sounds like he's had some issues and that things aren't exactly going well for him at the moment [insert "understatement" emoticon here]. Sort of bizarre to be reading the news over lunch and see something like this out of the blue about someone you knew 40 years ago...

I had never known of Don Tollefson until the original post in this thread. I did know his older brother, Art, as one of the TA's at Stanford-in-Britain I in early 1966, and he is a sweet and caring man. Googling his brother's journey to the depths, I found out that he had tried to scam Art too, 20 years ago. I think that Don's sad, foul and shameless life tells us that the "40 year benefit" we often talk about in relation to recruits, is not a gift, but a two-way street. Those who go the wrong way on that street deserve to experience all the pain that they create.

My mother lives in the Philadelphia area, so I am familiar with Tollefsen. I had no clue that he had any affiliation with Stanford. A friend posted the announcement of the verdict on Facebook, but I didn't really have any context.
Thanks for posting the link.
I knew Don briefly, in passing - Redrum - 01-22-2015
Funny guy who obviously had a talent for stories.
What surprised me about the first story was this quote from Tollefson's mouthpiece (below) and why it didn't have Garvin sputtering:
Quote:Â I kind of think of him (Tollefson) as the Greek mythology figure Icarus who dared to fly too close to the sun and crashed to the earth, Goldman said. Mr. Tollefson was really the real deal and he is a good and decent man. A good and decent man whose fatal flaw here is that he tried to do too much.
