UC Regent on rejecting UC policy tying athletic coaches pay to graduation record:

Degree may not be goal

A college degree is not the goal of every athlete that comes to the university. They come for the athletics. They get an opportunity to leave their communities and come to a great university. They get mentoring and tutoring.
That it does not result in a college degree is not necessarily a bad thing.

I'm sure Jeff Tedford and Sandy Barbour agree. But one other take is refreshing: the standards are so low as to be meaningless for actual enforcement.
