Chasson Randle story - BostonCard - 01-22-2015

I think some of the points have been mentioned in earlier articles about Randle, but still, nice to see, especially in contrast to the fact that the NCAA is investigating 20 schools for academic fraud amongst athletes.

Quote:We’ll get back to Randle’s experience in the juvenile detention system in a minute, because there’s a good story there. But there’s also a good story about how Stanford is one of those few schools that’s able to remain among the nation’s elite in academics as well as in the revenue sports of football and basketball. It’s not that big-time Division I athletes can’t excel in school. They can. It’s just that their priorities end up being so focused toward sports that it’s extraordinarily difficult to chase both goals at a high level. Ask any coach who has had to worry about keeping his team’s academic record up so athletics can keep going. It’s not easy.

By the way, congrats to Chasson, who broke the 2000 point barrier (third in Stanford history, and only the 15th in Pac-12 history).

Re: Chasson Randle story - 2 for 2028 - 01-23-2015

Funny moment last night when Walton misspoke and said that Randle might just be the greatest player in the history of Pac 12 basketball.  My wife who rarely watches MBB with me happened to be listening at the time and burst out "What!?"  Dave Pasch seemed just as surprised for a second before realizing that Walton meant to say "history of Stanford basketball."

Glad to know Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Sean Elliot, Jason Kidd and Walton himself don't have to worry about being dethroned.  Should Todd Lichti, Brevin Knight, Adam Keefe, Casey Jacobsen, Brook Lopez and Hank Luisetti be worried?

Come on, Bill - Chasson's still on the second team and while that is still high praise to make the all-time squad he has work to do still.  March is a good time to beef up the resume.

One of Walton's many annoying habits as a commentator is wildly overstating praise or blame for whatever has caught his attention in the moment.
