5th year seniors - TrumpCard - 01-27-2015

When will we learn who is being invited back for a 5th year and who is accepting the invitation?
To those who are moving on, thank you for your service.

Re: 5th year seniors - BobK - 01-27-2015

Maybe at the LOI reception.  Or about then when the Spring roster is released.  Of course we know several plan to play while in grad school elsewhere.  Some are now public some aren't yet

Re: 5th year seniors - terry - 01-27-2015

Which ones are public, Bob?

Re: 5th year seniors - BobK - 01-27-2015

Reihner and Pratt who may not be playing, sorry about that, are public.

Re: 5th year seniors - StanFan88 - 01-27-2015

Pratt announced that he's hanging up his cleats so he's not transferring.  He's just not playing football any more.

Re: 5th year seniors - Spiny_Norman - 02-02-2015

Looks like Rollins Stallworth is coming back and will be on scholarship.

Re: 5th year seniors - kuz - 02-02-2015

Considering he seemed to be ahead of the likes of Conner Crane and Dontonio Jordan on the depth chart, I see nothing wrong with bringing Stallworth back for one last year.

Re: 5th year seniors - fullmetal - 02-03-2015

Kevin Reihner will play for Penn State.

Re: 5th year seniors - CTcard - 02-03-2015

The official site now has a 2015 roster up.

Fifth year seniors listed are:
Anderson, Austin, Cajuste, Callihan, Crower, Harris, Hayes, Hogan, Hopkins, Krishnamurthi, Lyons, Pippens, Rotto, Salem, Skov, Stallworth, Tubbs, Wright, Yazdi, Young.

While I don't necessarily expect all of those guys to actually be back in 2015, the list does exclude a few guys - notably Reihner and Pratt as noted above.

The roster clearly hasn't been updated. We don't even have room for all of those guys.

Well, it was updated. On Monday.
That doesn't mean it's an accurate reflection of who will really be on the team next year.

However,
I count 82 guys listed.
I count 18 guys without a scholarship, though I'm not entirely certain who has a scholarship.
[That 18 does NOT include Stallworth, who apparently is getting a scholarship.]
That would give us 21 spots.

We have 20 commits according to Rivals.
2 of those are supposedly going on a mission.
We are waiting on about 2 other guys (Meeks, Reid).
So, we might have room for all those guys.

Plus Barton coming back from a mission.

Re: 5th year seniors - Spiny_Norman - 02-14-2015

Per Drukarev (free article on Rivals),

Quote:  JB Salem, Lance Callihan, Anthony Hayes, Charlie Hopkins and Kevin Reihner are not returning the The Farm, nor is Torsten Rotto.  Ra'Chard Pippens will be back for his fifth year at Stanford, as will former walk-on Rollins Stallworth, who will play his final season of college football on scholarship.  As of Wednesday, defensive tackle Alex Yazdi was still undecided.

Drukarev also confirms that Lyons, Crower, Young are planning to transfer.

Re: 5th year seniors - Hank 91 - 02-15-2015

While there has been some speculation that this is somehow an indictment of Shaw, I'd guess that it's just a consequence of becoming an elite program. I'd be interested to see some transfer figures for places like Alabama, for instance. When there are good young players in the pipeline, sometimes the seniors just see the writing on the wall. (Shaw intimated as much in Lyons's case.)

Shaw really hinted at that in the case of Lyons.  the only 5th year senior I think we will really miss is Callahan, purely because of our lack of depth at NT. hopefully Anan can contribute soon, or the coaches have a contingency plan for converting an OG to a DT.

Re: 5th year seniors - Durty Nelly - 02-15-2015

Not many 5th year seniors on the 2015 team if the thread on departures is accurate. Maybe 6-8 starters among them.

Kevin Anderson
Brendon Austin
Devon Cajuste
Ronnie Harris
Kevin Hogan
Gautam Krishnamurthi
Ra'Chard Pippens
Patrick Skov
Rollins Stallworth
Austin Tubbs
Remound Wright
Alex Yadzi

Callihan has appeared in five games over his time at Stanford - I believe all in garbage time. It's hard to see how sticking around another year would lead to much playing time.

Lyons on the other hand would have been one of two or three returning DBs with any starting experience (the "or three" is contingent upon Hoffpauir's baseball future). There is little doubt he would play a lot in 2015 if he were to return; and most likely would have begun the season as a starter. As such, his loss will have an impact on the team.

I count 9 scholarship players there.
I count another 9 scholarship seniors who will use up there eligibility next season.

That's 18. Adding typical attrition Stanford could probably sign as many frosh as they wish to/can manage in 2016.

Re: 5th year seniors - TrumpCard - 02-15-2015

Is there an avaialble scholarship for Yadzi?  The chance to become a scholarship athlete at Stanford would be tough to pass up.

Re: 5th year seniors - Langdude - 02-15-2015

I actually think that the quantity of 5th years who are transferring is a comment not merely that we have been getting better athletes - players who can compete at other schools but at Stanford would not get as much playing time as they would want - but is also a comment on the power of Stanford to retain its athletes. At many other schools, if a player does not foresee getting enough PT, they will transfer earlier than their 5th year. But the desirability of the Stanford degree, and possibly their relationships with teammates and coaches, cause them to stay through their senior year before looking to play more elsewhere. There are of course exceptions (e.g., Nottingham), but they are very few.

There are few if any schools that can claim the retentional ability that Stanford offers. And it speaks highly of the sort of student athletes that we attract.
