No Hits, No Runs, Errors... - 76lsjumb - 04-04-2015

Don't look now, but, while we've been debating the relative merits of an NIT Basketball Championship, the baseball and softball teams have combined to win exactly 1 game between them in the first nine games of the Pac-12 conference season for both.  Baseball was just swept by UW at Sunken Diamond for the first time ever and is 0-9 so far in conference play.  Softball is 1-8, having taken a game from next-to-last Utah.

Doesn't look like too many Director's Cup points this year from these perennial [up to now] contributors...

Very unlikely for points.  But fact baseball lost their 3 weekend pitchers and softball both their pitchers.  Makes it hard to win with no pitchers

Just me, or do we seem to be particularly snakebit in baseball and softball vis a vis injuries.  Maybe the Shanon Turley magic needs to be applied here?

Turley is over all S&C.  So the buck stops there so to say

Don't think we are getting any MVB points this year either.  The team is in 8th place in the MPSF and has only beaten 1 team that is ahead of them in the standings.

In fact, only 3 spring teams are in the top 10 - WWP (#2 with a h.u.g.e match vs. #1 UCLA on Saturday), MGolf (#9) and WTennis (#10).

Stanford will close out the winter sports with some points in WGym which just qualified for the NCAA championship.  MGym is #3 and should qualify as well.

Track teams ranked 12 and 14 but we have big meet like NCAA potential in both

UCLA has a bunch of spring sport points ready to go, and will come out of the winter reasonably close to Stanford.  A decent spring by UCLA should be enough to give them the NACDA Directors' Cup.  I have not projected the numbers yet, but I suspect UCLA can capture the cup with just a few solid finishes.

Update - Quick Tally - Stanford likely will finish in the mid to high 1300s.  Unexpectedly strong finishes on the men's side (Gymnastics, T&F, Golf) are essential as only 60+ point women results will be in top 10 sports on female side.  UCLA has the potential to finish in the low 1400s rather easily if things go their way.  UCLA likely will max out on scoring teams too with better balance between M & W and a few low scores that won't impact their tally too much.  Hard to imagine Stanford at 1400+.  UCLA will need some tough losses to keep them below 1400 (ie. early Men's tennis exit, baseball loss in regionals).

Equally important, if not more so, is the streak of years with at least one NCAA team championship.  From what I'm reading, men's golf may be our only shot?  Women's water polo?

The stroke and then match play format in men's golf makes it very hard to count on that NCAA Team Title even if Stanford was ranked #1.  Women's tennis probably would have better odds, though it is unlikely.  Men's Gymnastics LOOKS like a possibility, but Oklahoma's meet average is so far ahead of the others that even a few falls would not be enough to swing the result to another team.

Best chance is with Women's Water Polo.  They are currently ranked #2.  They are the defending champs.  And, importantly, that NCAA tournament is at Stanford this year.

Stanford MGYM leads all six teams by 2.15 pts in its qualifying round.  kal owns the top three gymnasts in the all-around standings, with Stanford's top all-arounder at 8th place.

WWP has but one loss on the season--an OT loss by one goal to UCLA at the UC-Irvine invitational.  Stanford has home water in their next showdown this Saturday at noon vs. the Bruins.

It is a good start.  However, Oklahoma is in the other session.  The Stanford men finished the session at 435.  Not unlikely that Oklahoma will be up near 444 or 445 in the second session.  9 or 10 points is a very large gap in gymnastics.

2nd place for Stanford. Still a heck of season. OU loses 7 gymnasts this offseason.
