WWP takes down Bruins - CTcard - 04-11-2015

#2 Stanford beat #1 UCLA today in women's water polo.

Stanford has now taken 2 of 3 from the Bruins so far this year.
Stanford won early in the season at the Stanford Invitational (at Stanford) 10-6.
Stanford lost at the Irvine Invitational (at Irvine) 6-7 in OT.
Stanford won today at Stanford 8-7.

I think both teams have only lost games to each other this year.

A great game a clutch win.  Yes the teams have lost to each other.  Stanford up 2-1 on ucla and that's the only losses

Re: WWP takes down Bruins - M T - 04-11-2015

I couldn't attend, but I'm glad to read it was a full house, with some luminaries.  Congrats to the team.

Today's win seems very important.  Since Stanford (4-0, 19-1) now has sole possession of the lead in the MPSF.
The next two teams in the MPSF are USC (4-1, 21-2) and UCLA (4-1, 20-2), then Cal (2-2, 16-5).  Assuming Stanford doesn't lose its remaining games, the MPSF championship seeding will have a match between USC and UCLA, guaranteeing only one of them can get into the championship game.  Stanford will be playing a clearly weaker team in the semis and should win.  Even if Stanford loses before the championship game, I'd think Stanford likely would get an invitation to the national championship tournament.

I would expect whoever wins the MPSF tournament will have the NC #1 seed.  Again, whoever gets that has the inside track to the NC championship, but the teams are too equal to say any one team has a definite advantage.

By the way, I see the WWP match of Stanford at California will be on the PAC-12 channel Thursday 4/16, 5:00 PM PT .Â
