When I first heard that song in 1966, I thought he must be a much older guy because of the strength and emotion in his voice. Turns out he was just a few years older than I. RIP, Percy.

That song triggers many fond memories. It still gives me goose bumps. He will live forever in that song. RIP, Percy.

Sad day. Musically it is a shame he seems to be remembered for only one song, awesome as it is.

I remember those, too, but I suspect only Nan3cy, Redrum, CowboyIndian and you also do. Still, that one hit should be enough to put in the Hall of Fame IMUO.

Hate the cover version. Like reading Shakespeare in Eubonics . . . . Just not even close to the same. Now, if you can come with someone else doing a cover . . .. So many choices. Elvis? Garth Brooks? Willie Nelson? Aretha? Call me. 'Til then the King of this particular song is dead.

When I first heard the song in the Spring of 1966 I was in Europe (Stanford in Britain I) and in love.
RIP Percy.
