Catch it like Beckham -
BostonCard - 04-17-2015
A nice segment on our relatively fresh verbal, Kaden Smith, smashing Odell Beckham Jr's one handed catch record.

Quote:Smith vows it could have been more, if they did not run out of footballs during the attempt.

Sorry, you'll have to wait for the upgrade. The only similar program I could find did not install one of the files correctly.

Note to non-track fans:
The ball is called the shot. Putting is what the athlete does with it. The event is called the shot put.
Shot put
Discus throw
Javelin throw
Hammer throw

Not that I could do it, but that doesn't really seem that impressive to me. I'd think if you could dunk a basketball you could probably dunk a shot put. It's a lot smaller so you don't need as much vertical to get it over the rim.

Yeah, but he'll need to be able to dunk a medicine ball with one hand whilst singing the Catalina Magdalena Luptenschteiner Volunbeiner before he makes it to the the 3-deep on our TE depth chart....

Even then, I'd probably take the other side of that bet...

I'd guess that holding the shot would take about 4" off the vertical of a 6'4", 240 athlete like Smith,
Not that there are many.

In high schools the boys shot comes in at 12 pounds! Jumping with that type of extra weight is not trivial. In my youth I had a lovely 30+ inch vertical, but if I even had 3 pound ankle weights I felt grounded. Can't even imagine trying to carry and then dunk a 12 pound item.
Admittedly I was a bit horrified by the shot hitting the court. I would imagine facility managers that scream at the kids for not wearing sneakers in PE class would have a hard time watching that video. Can't imagine too many kids will get to try the challenge as the shot would seem certain to do meaningful damage to hardwoods or blacktops.

Farm93, that's funny, that was my reaction too. In one of the GoPro shots, I thought I could see a pad on the basketball floor, but it may have been wishful thinking. Also glad he was coordinated enough to not have it crash onto his head or shoulder.
Seems like a heck of an athlete. Glad he's going to play for us. The athletic competition between our TE corps must be something to watch.

Although it turned out okay this was a foolish stunt. He could have easily damaged nerves, tendons or muscles in his wrist, arm and/shoulder, I think, and for what? Bragging rights at the potential expense of his career?

Well that's what I'm saying, to dunk a basketball requires you to get up to your forearm on the rim. To dunk a softball (or shot), you would just need to get to midpalm probably. At my best I could only ever get fingers on the rim, but if I'd really focused on lower body strength I probably could've dunked a tennis ball. A basketball would've never been possible.
So even though I'm sure the vert suffers carrying that extra weight, the fact that it's a lot smaller than a basketball probably offsets it mostly. And if you're a 6'4" TE prospect, you should definitely be able to dunk a basketball. Just seems like a silly stunt, and one that doesn't seem that impressive. I just hope he can catch a football and knock people on their butts when runblocking.
I thought about the court damage but it looked like they had a pad put down. A couple other youtube videos of people doing the same thing had pads down too.

I'm probably being a curmudgeon but this was my thought too: "Cool - but that could have gone very wrong very fast."
Also, it should be noted that Beckham had one QB and was using the same hand for the entire minute, while Smith had two passers and was using both hands independently. That obviously gave Smith an advantage in a time-restricted situation. Granted, Beckham's QB was Drew Brees.
