spring sports news - NCAA invitations - Spiny_Norman - 04-27-2015

As expected, Stanford women's water polo is seeded 2nd behind MPSF conference champ UCLA in the NCAA bracket announced today.  USC is 3rd, Cal is 4th.  Stanford opens on May 8 vs. Princeton or Wagner.  Note that Stanford hosts this year.  If you are in the area, get out and cheer for these gals.  They are pretty darned good.  We'll be seeing some of them in the Olympics in Rio next year. Bracket here - http://www.ncaa.com/interactive-bracket/waterpolo-women/nc

The women's golf team will be playing in the Utah regional on May 7, 8 and 9.  The top 6 teams in each region advance to the NCAA championships in Florida.  http://www.ncaa.com/news/golf-women/article/2015-04-27/2015-ncaa-division-i-womens-golf-regional-selections-announced

Oof, I was a little worried after Stanford dropped that game against kal in the MPSF tourney.  Hope the team has righted the ship.

Stanford women's tennis seeded 14th.  In the same part of the bracket as #3 Cal.  http://www.ncaa.com/interactive-bracket/tennis-women/d1

Stanford men's tennis seeded unseeded.  In the same bracket as #10 Duke and #7 USC (which Stanford beat about 2 weeks ago).  http://www.ncaa.com/interactive-bracket/tennis-men/d1

Seeded unseeded?  Sounds like a dispute over hamburger buns.

You got me, Ferrari.  I had typed "seeded" then went over to the NCAA bracket and did not see a number next to Stanford's name.  Corrected now.

The NCAA tries to minimize travel costs for teams competing in its championships.  Except where Stanford is concerned.  The golf team has been assigned to play at Chapel Hill, NC as the #2 seed.  For some reason, Georgia Tech will travel cross-country as the #2 seed in San Diego while Stanford goes to North Carolina.  One might think that the NCAA did this to avoid top seeded teams in the same regional from the same conference since ASU is #1 at San Diego and Florida State is #1 at Chapel Hill.  But the NCAA assigned Texas and Texas Tech to the same regional to be played on Texas Tech's home course.

The 54 hole regional tournaments will be played May 14-16.  Top 5 teams in each region advance.
