Athlon ranks the Pac-12 coaches - BostonCard - 05-08-2015

And ranks Shaw third behind Graham (ASU) and RichRod (UofA).

Weselface (Sarkisian) is 9th, and Sonny Dykes is 11th.  Surprised Helfrich is ranked seventh; aside from taking his team to the National Championship game, what else did Athlon want from him?  Yes, he inherited a loaded Oregon, but surely he should be ranked higher than Peterson (who is third, strictly on the basis of what he accomplished at Boise State), and Wittingham, who has done ok, but not spectacularly since Utah joined the Pac-12.

And Gary Andersen is ranked above Helfrich, without having coached a game in the Pac-12 yet...??

Agreed, and they pulled together a respectable 2015 class and are working on another one in 2016.

To be a little more specific about D.ykes' record, he took C'al from 3-9 the year before he arrived, to 1-11, to 5-7. We'll see what happens next.

And they have what may be an elite qb coming back.

Could be that, too.

Big gap between eternal doom and competence.  Yikes needs to deliver 6-6 or better this year, which likely means he needs to go 4-5 in conference having an OOC roadie at Texas.  Pretty tall order with P12 road games against Utah, UCLA, Oregon, and Stanford.  The key will be the extent to which their swiss cheese defense is any better this season.  Last year they could barely stop anyone.

Big recency bias on the rankings -- Rodriguez is a fine coach but is being over ranked here by one good year on the W-L column. (Zona was, in fact, a bit lucky last year -- not really a 10-win team.)

Anyway, I think Andersen might surprise some folks here. He's a good coach and will presumably get to coach his way rather than Barry Alvarez's.

Re: Athlon ranks the Pac-12 coaches - BostonCard - 05-09-2015

If recently bias is the issue, how do you explain Helfrich.  He only took his team to the national championship last year.

IMO, they are all good coaches. No Pop Warner's, but no Buddy's or Wlat's either.

Pop Warner's what?

If Cal's defense improves they will be formidable.

Big if, but OTOH they really only have one direction to go.
