The LSJUMB won't be going to away games for a year.......
As an outcome of the investigation, the band will be unable to travel with any Stanford athletic team to perform at away athletic events during the 2015-16 academic year, including post-season games. The band will be permitted to play at home events and at certain non-athletic events.

Can anyone who has ever seen the band present itself and perform, be at all surprised?

Yes very and also very disappointed
I don't think performance or presentation has much to do w/ it - Redrum - 05-15-2015
This is fraternity/sorority behavior. A closed society with its own rules and traditions but run by 19-20 -year olds. What could go wrong? Some of the brightest kids in America and they are so clueless. But, a lot of other closed social organizations give no clue up front or in public and engage in equal or worse stuff. It will get ferreted out one group at a time. And kids will figure out
other ways to rage on.
What is wrong with this country and this university? -

Where in the world can misfit nerdy kids who need to let loose and experience life go if they can't do it by joining the Stanford band? I think the Stanford band has served as a social development zone for people who have badly needed it for generations. Let them be. They really aren't hurting anyone.

I won't pretend to say that the LSJUMB didn't deserve some kind of punishment for their off-campus practices. WAY back in the day, the band had zero social rituals or traditions . . . well, other than beer and doughnuts ("the breakfast of champions") on game days (and a few guys took a particular interest in whippets). The road trips were just like any other roadie by college-aged kids. Partying and fun? Absolutely. Hazing or questionnaires? Please.
BUT, I will say that Stanford teams and fans - especially those attending non-home events - may start to appreciate just how supportive the LSJUMB is to Stanford student athletics. As I've said many times before, there is no group on campus more supportive of Stanford sports than the members of the band. They show up for football and men's basketball (of course), but they are there for countless other non-revenue sports, and THAT TAKES A LOT OF TIME AND ATTENTION. And that doesn't even include off-campus 'rallies" or charity/cause appearances. None of the good stuff gets any run; only the bad. It pisses me off a bit, but that's the world we live in.
And if Stanford ever imposes a "traditional band" on campus - as some here would like to see - then you will see a great Vanishing Act. All the sudden, the #1 support group for Stanford athletics will be gone. And people will wonder how/why that happened . . .
P.S. My gut is with Stymie on this one, but again, I don't know any of the facts (it does bother me that there evidently was some BS questionnaires that were sexually inappropriate).
P.P.S. There was one "tradition" I heard about - showing some porn flick early in the fall (of course there were porn flicks shown campus-wide at that time . . . can you imagine?). Anyway, that "tradition" was ended my frosh year when members of the band ripped the film off the spool and shredded it because the scenes were so bad.

Right. You can't avoid noticing the assertive presence of other programs' bands at Stanford home games (not least Oregon's and Southern Kal's, making themselves heard the way they do between plays).

As an LSJUMBer about two years (?) behind teejers I wholeheartedly agree with this statement.
In fact, in some ways what bothers me the most is that these transgressions actually look like the typical college marching band behavior. I haven't kept track of which was which, but didn't we hear about something almost identical from ... Ohio State(?).
LSJUMB behavior in the past was still unacceptable to University administrators and many alums, but had a different flavor: more free-form, anarchic, and random.
Others may not see the difference but it looks stark to me. The caveat, of course, is that my perspective from age and inside/outside has changed drastically and may be a dominant effect coloring this view.

And if the ban decides yes, we are bad so we are not going to perform anywhere for a year? Will the University import a band? Hire pros? Hmmm.

Love the band - particularly their support of Stanford Athletes and the creative, joyous energy they bring to every performance.Â
Hopefully this sordid stuff will get sorted out - As I see it the essence of the band has been that they can self-organize and self-manage a complex activity and keep it fun, relevant to the student body and creatively chaotic while subsisting on beer and donuts.Â
In some ways they are the antithesis of the militaristic, no-fun bands run by "adults" at other schools. So if some are now comparing their management style to Ohio State's band that's a bad, bad thing but we're probably over-reacting.
I'm guessing this gets sorted out .... anyone have an inside view on this?

That means no Band at Northwestern, USC or Colorado. 3 games I was planning to attend this year. No Band at Corvallis or Pullman either. And no bowl game! That's a harsh penalty. I have been supportive of the Band in the past when they were guilty of sophomoric behavior. When they were suspended for dropping trou on the field and were not allowed to perform at the Rose Bowl vs. UCLA, I borrowed a fellow alum's band jacket and wore it to the game. Got a long look from Andy Geiger, the AD at the time.
But some of the current transgressions cross the line in my book - hazing, sexual harassment. I do think the school needs to let the Band know that such behavior won't be tolerated.

Another former band member chiming in.Â
Hazing and sexual harassment is unacceptable in any setting, and Stanford rightly needs to crack down on that type of behavior.Â
I do not, however, agree with the characterization that such conduct from the band is unsurprising or even an inevitable result of the silly, irreverent, or immature behavior people see in public. The students who participate in the band learn a lot about running an organization that helps them make major contributions to society when they graduate, notwithstanding the fact that they drink alcohol and behave immaturely sometimes while they are in college. Stanford rightly takes a laissez faire approach with the band most of the time, just like the approach that Stanford takes with all the other student-run organizations that provide opportunities for students to become independent adults. I would not want to see Stanford become a babysitter for the band or any other student-run organization.Â

Well said, TrumpCard!
Thumbs up from this former band member. I was never hazed or asked inappropriate questions in the 90s, so these "traditions" must be something that began in the 2000s.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'll be brief... - Redrum - 05-15-2015
... The issue here is not whether we broke a few rules, or took a few liberties with our female party guests - we did.
[winks at Dean Wormer]
But you can't hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the whole fraternity system? And if the whole fraternity system is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Greg - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!

Not having been in a college band or knowing anyone real well who has, combined with the fact another major university had a band doing similar things, definitely changes my perspective.
I've always had a love-hate kind of view of the LSJUMB. Love the fact it is given the freedom to express itself, but don't always like how that expression is manifested. Making fun of UCLA handicapped parking scandal? Awesome. Making fun of the Irish Potato Famine? Not so much. My assumption was the "buttoned down" bands would be more university managed, and as a result not have issues going off the rails with inappropriate commentary and hazing.
The fact this isn't the case makes the punishment a little too harsh to me. Maybe ban them from going to the USC football game, but given the support (tangible or perceived) it provides Stanford teams on the road, it seems a bit too putative to take the entire road schedule of athletic contests for a school year off the band's itinerary. Redrum is right. You can't hold the whole band accountable, and punish the sports teams without doing some real collateral damage.

Oh, so we still have to put up with them at home? Hardly seems fair. :P
Having marched in two bands not dubbed LSJUMB, I'm pretty sure you can have fun and play good music without all the BS. Here I'm using "BS" as a substitute for:
Quote:The Shak and Band community offer a space to act out, to explore, to play poorly - in general, Band strives to counter the pressures and normalizing forces of college life by providing a space to be free.
Solution: Buy your own off-campus house if you want to trash it. I mean "be free".
Obviously I succumbed to the normalizing forces of college (and adult) life, but I was cool once - I swear! Now get off my drought-ravaged lawn!!!!

I was at the infamous "Irish Potato Famine" skit, and, while that aspect got a lot of bad press, the overall skit was much more about the fact that Notre Dame's nickname "The Fighting Irish" and mascot (a Leprachaun looking to get into a bar fight) would, in any other context, be considered offensive. The skit started with the line "The Irish, why must they fight".
