Their special helmet for the Texas game.  The logo is, paradoxically, a kind of anti-logo. More of a Rorschach test.  Now you see the be ar, now you see graffiti sprayed on the side of a BART train.

Never a good idea to go to white helmets when they aren't your standard uniform.  Really never a good idea to use some new brand on your helmet.  But Ca.l doesn't know the first thing about branding, so not surprising.  Word is the recruits like it...

Meh. Back in the '90s, UCLA re-did the bruin to be less kind, less gentle. If the kids dig it, then it's irrelevant what the fogeys think about it.

So this new helmet is just for the Texas game?

I believe every C.al helmet design in the last 35+ years included the script C.al. Before that, they used the Block C. I'm not so sure about the wisdom of dropping the logo they've used for so long, even just for a game every now and then.

The somewhat abstract b.ear logo does not seem readily identifiable with C.al -- especially given that they've made the helmet white, which is not one of C.al's school colors. It's not good to have someone look at your helmet and wonder who you are.

Doesn't seem like a good idea to me, but I'm certainly no expert about this stuff.

Isn't that what's in the middle of the basketball floor in Haas Pavilion?

Didn't they have just a bear claw for a year or two?

Yes, it is. Why doesn't the University of California use the be-r from the state flag?

Answering my own question...and bowing to Terry once again.

If it's a baboon the other side of the helmet should be hilarious.

That white helmet makes me think of Star Wars storm troopers.

Speaking as someone who has been involved in branding for three decades, this is the action you take when you can't stand your brand and you think you have a brand that is counterproductive in the marketplace.  Normally with logos, you try to adhere to successes or good feelings from the past, or if you feel you have migrated to a totally different business you move to a very different logo.  The Bares are still in the football business, so my guess is that they are sprinting away from what they feel is a counterproductive brand.

My old firm had a logo that had an icon that looked alarmingly like Enron.  Goodbye, old logo; hello new logo that looks nothing like the old logo.

My supposition is that a confluence of "new" opinions resulted in the let's-throw-out-everything-in-order-to-make-people-forget-recent-failures drive to get a new logo in order to help kick start the football brand.

My understanding is that Nike is behind several schools recently moving to meaner looking mascots that are more sparsely drawn.

One example is UConn, which went from a cuddly, friendly husky dog to a mean, spare look. The official story was that it was more mobile-browser-friendly. The unofficial story was that somebody at Nike decided they could sell more merchandise with the new look. The other unofficial story is that somehow Nike conned UConn to paying them a large consulting fee for coming up with the new logo.

I think I see a similarity to the c.a.l. evolution.

The only time I think of stormtroopers at a football game is when our boys come out of the tunnel at Portapotty Memorial in their all whites on their way to giving Low APR U another @$$-whoopin

Well except it's only for one game.  If you are correct it is a very timid start.

If it's for only one game, it's confusing, useless and stupid.

Re: Well, well, well. Look what the Be ars drug in - Hulk01 - 05-19-2015

For decades nearing a century, good graphic designers have followed a first law of design: Keep it simple.

This Cal "logo" represents not just a departure, but a total shift: Forget keep it simple; make it busy.

How this might represent good principle of design, much less a better one, I've no idea.  But Cal's never looked polished at brand identity.  And this look like it could be any Be.ar that you wish: Baylor, Chicago, Cal, even UCLA.  What makes this uniquely Cal's?  What gives them any ownership of this identity?

On the other hand, it's not intended as a permanent new identity but a fun one-off.  And perhaps there's something good to be said for the occasional, temporary swerve.  I can't insist that there isn't.
