Stanford (2) v Oregon (1) Women's Ultimate Live Thread - Bruce Wang - 05-25-2015

For you Stanford sports junkies, ESPN3 is showing the college ultimate frisbee championship. Too bad no Directors' Cup points for this.

How'd the match go for Stanford?

Re: Stanford (2) v Oregon (1) Women's Ultimate Live Thread - BigEasyCard - 05-26-2015

"Oregon Fugue wins the 2015 USA Ultimate Division I Women’s College Championship with a 13-11 victory over Stanford Superfly."

I believe that is what UCB says every year regarding Rugby.
I still can't believe women's bowling got that coveted NCAA championship format before women's ultimate.  I guess a request for billiards will be up next from the rust belt schools.

Re: Stanford (2) v Oregon (1) Women's Ultimate Live Thread - fullmetal - 05-26-2015

I'm sad archery didn't make the cut as an emerging sport.  I don't think ultimate has been brought up to the emerging sport list, but it should be.

Also, Stanford has the best team name out there.  Fugue?  Fuhgeddaboutit.

I don't know about those activities, but if the International Olympic Committee says that ballroom dancing is a sport worthy of Olympic designation, I would think it should be included in the Directors Cup calculation.

Introducing Matt Lienert, Olympic Champion.

Despite the best efforts of DanceSport, I think it will be a cold day in at least purgatory (if not hell) if the IOC ever included competitive ballroom on the program...!

The way ice dancing is going... - Redrum - 05-27-2015

I can easily see competitive ballroom dancing claiming it is a "sister" sport and worthy of Olympics inclusion.

Re: Stanford (2) v Oregon (1) Women's Ultimate Live Thread - CornFed - 05-27-2015

It is, as of this moment, already a cold day in Hades as I am passing on the following Wikipedia entry.  As my first such experience, I have no doubt that the information is probably false.

"The International Olympic Committee now recognizes competitive ballroom dance.[sup][8][/sup] It has recognized another body, the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF), as the sole representative body for dancesport in the Olympic Games. However, it seems doubtful that dance will be included in the Olympic Games, especially in light of efforts to reduce the number of participating sports."

Of course there are two parts to that. The part that says "it seems doubtful that dance will be included in the Olympic Games" gives a chance for Hades to remain uncomfortably toasty.

And ... what does it mean that the IOC "recognizes" a sport? That when a member of the committee sees it on TV they can say, "yeah, I know what that is"?

Re: Stanford (2) v Oregon (1) Women's Ultimate Live Thread - fullmetal - 05-27-2015

Likely.  Not sure if competitive ballroom fits the "Citius, altius, fortius" Olympic motto...just saying.

Rollersports fits that motto better than ballroom, and rollersports is nowhere near inclusion.  (I mean, wrestling almost got dropped, and baseball/softball are right out.  You have to be as popular as rugby sevens to get in these days.)

I vote for timber sports or caber tossing....

Think of the twenty page threads arguing whether Stanford kilts should include red, white and black or just red and white.

I do like the idea of Olympic Tug of War. It'll make it like elementary school field day.

and for those who remember the made-for-TV sports show "Superteams" there was the "epic" 1 hour and 20 minute tug of war final in 1978 (this is a 10 min version)
