I'm not entirely sure what their methodology was, but the article includes the most commonly searched spellings of words in each state. (I am guessing they looked analyzed for how often people searched for the term "how do you spell XXXX" by state. It's also interesting what the search autocomplete suggests when you type "how do you spell" in the search box (for me the choices were "cancelled", "40", "grey", "Mississippi" and, "Resume"). Looks like a lot of states struggle with grey/gray, perhaps because both are acceptable spellings.

Google is not a dictionary. You'd have better luck consulting Merriam-Webster.
And "grey" is not acceptable in American English. On this side of the pond, it's "gray."

Strangely, it turns out that great arbiter of language and spelling, Microsoft Word, complains to me that gray is a misspelling but is perfectly fine with grey. [I checked, I am set to English (US).]
I am assuming that by "this side of the pond" you are referring to Lake Superior, as grey is the more common form in Canada.
