Great Stanford comebacks -
Spiny_Norman - 06-02-2015
After the women's golf finals, the Stanford AD published an article that highlighted great comebacks in Stanford athletics history
http://www.gostanford.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=30600&ATCLID=210118187
What do you think they missed? I would add:
1990 Big Game
2014 baseball regional win over Indiana with Tommy Edman's 2 run walk-off homer
For those who are less familiar with the Paul Carey HR, it is the stuff of legend. Stanford was behind 5-2 in the bottom of the 10th in an elimination game. On the mound for LSU was Ben McDonald, the #1 pick in the MLB draft. And then this happened.

We had friends over to have dinner and watch that Bluebonnet Bowl game. We nearly stopped watching at the half -- thank goodness we decided to be gluttons for punishment... ;)

Best comeback ever:Â walking down frat row at Berkeley after winning the 2000 Big Game...some drunken frat boy yells out "Stanford Sucks!" and a fan in front of me yells back, "Dude you were in middle school the last time Cal won Big Game!"Â Even his frat brothers were rolling after that one
THAT'S WHAT I CALL A COMEBACK!

October 6, 2007: Greatest. Upset. Ever
Folks might not recall that Stanford was down to the #1 (coaches poll) team at the Coliseum, 23-14, until Derek Belch nailed a 26-yard field goal with 5:43 left in the fourth quarter. Wopamo Osaisai intercepted a John David Booty pass with under 3 minutes left and the rest, as they say, is history.

Winning in South Bend in 1990 which gave birth to the legend of Touchdown Tommy should be included.

But in all seriousness, there's a reason it's called the GREATEST.UPSET.EVER

Yes, I think because it was such a massive upset, it gets lost that it was also a pretty amazing comeback.

I can't argue with any of the above. Some of these brought back some great memories.
For the Carey's slam against LSU, I was stuck in the office late with the game on the radio. I didn't know one of our student workers, an undergrad, was also there in his cubicle listening to the game until Carey's shot at which point we both started primal-screaming and bunny-hopping down the hallway like baby goats on a sugar high.
Kind of the same for the MBB win over Rhode Island - my usual MBB-watching crew was out of town so I watched alone at home. As soon as the game was over, my phone rang - I picked up the phone and just yelled, loud and long - best part was, I was getting the exact same reaction on the other end of the line. I am almost certain my upstairs neighbors, both Duke grads about to watch their game against Kentucky, had to have hated that - I did not hear a peep from them for months afterward :-)
Otherwise, I would have to add the list, #9 WVBs comeback win to upset #1 Washington (22-0 to that point) in Burnham in our last championship season, 2004-05. We dropped the first 2 sets 28-30, 11-30 then came back to win the next two 30-27, 34-32...talk about scrappy. In the fifth set, we were down 14-11 and came back to win 20-18 after a service ace by Jen Hucke. That 5th set alone had 23 tied scores and one lead change...double scrappy! Ogannah Nnamani ka-boomed the Husky Women for 37 kills that night too... epically great stuff!

Later in life I ended up playing softball with LSU's third baseman from that 1987 game. We had VERY different memories of Carey's grand slam :)

That WVB game was a great comeback. Crazy that night. Then on to the NCAA Championship win.

Among all the love for the comeback win @USC in 2007, let's not forget the win @USC in 2011 was also a comeback after the pick 6.

Stanford - Duke in Oakland in December 2000. Scoring on every possession in the last 6+ minutes to come all the way back with Condi and Tiger in the house.

Triple OT. Classic.

That triple OT game against U'S'C in 2011 was amazing. Maybe the most exciting game I ever attended in person. Game Day, 94,000 people, Andrew Luck, noise (it was so loud!), changes in momentum, twists and turns, unbearable suspense. What I will always remember was how the intensity was so thick in the air. What a game.

That was probably the best comeback (and win) I saw live while I was a student, it was awesome. And you could tell after they won that match they weren't going to lose one the rest of the season.

Mick all you had to say was "What's Your Deal" and everyone would have known what you were saying
