Yet another way to punish Stanford in the rankings - oman - 06-03-2015

http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2015/6/1/8678633/CHIPOTLE-RANKINGS

California is ground zero for the worlds best burritos, or at least was back when I was allowing myself to scarf down burritos at breakneck pace. So this #71 is pretty biased against all Cali schools.

The ratings should be in proximity to all burritos, and that being said, not having been near campus in a few years, and Palo Alto being much less burrito-ey than when I went to school, I am not sure if one can get a good grimy burrito closer than whatever Chipotle they are basing this ranking on.

Treehouse burritos are, while not excellent, pretty solid. And there's a Chipotle on el camino, right?

Re: Yet another way to punish Stanford in the rankings - French Rage - 06-03-2015

And La Costena is only one town over.

True but "I need to drive a half hour to get a burrito" seems somehow antithetical to the spirit of the burrito.

True.

But how long is it by bike?

The best burritos around here are at Taqueria La Bamba in Mountain View, about 15 minutes.  It is Salvadoran.  It routinely gets the "best in the Bay Area" type awards.  By comparison, Chipotle is horse fodder.

There is a Chipotle within about a 15 minute walk of where I reside.  It's not inconvenient at all.  Nice to get out and walk.  Sometimes being ranked 71/129 isn't that bad!

That one's in Mt. View.  Looks pretty good.  Is La Costena still around?  I know it was on Middlefield in Mt. View, they had great burritos.

If you want Mexican food, go to a Mexican neighborhood. Mexican restaurants in Northern California are better at enchiladas than burritos. You can get a good burrito, sometimes in a shop rather than a dedicated restaurant, but go to a Mexican neighborhood. Chipotle is fast food. It is decent, but it's more like the In-N-Out of burritos, good for what it is.

As for Arizona, try the Tamale Factory in Tucson. I never knew masa and filling could taste so good!

Sorry, but any burrito list that includes places like New York, Chicago and Boston loses credibility.

Note that burritos in Mexico (where they are really only served in the Northern part of the country) are very different from our popularized notion of burritos.  Really, what most of us understand as burritos are "Mission Burritos", named after the San Francisco neighborhood.

By the way, fivethirtyeight.com had a burrito bracket, an NCAA basketball-tournament-like tourney pitting the top-64 burrito places against each other in an elimination format.  The winner, which I can attest to was La Taqueria here in the Mission.

Yvonne-

Agreed the Tamale factor is pretty amazing.

It looks as though Taqueira La Bamba and La Costena have both moved from the corner of Rensgstorff and Old Middlefield to the strip mall at Rengstorff and Middledield Road about a block or so away.

I'd forgotten about those places - used to go all the time way back when.

The crumbling buildings where La Costena and La Bamba were located were demolished to make way for housing.  La Bamba is now two blocks away in a relatively nice place in a strip mall at the corner of Rengstorff and the new Middlefield, rather than Old Middlefield.  You actually can sit down to eat if you want to.  La Costena is also on new Middlefield now but a mile down near the corner of Whisman.  Both continue to thrive.  I've learned not to show up at La Bamba at 12:15, since the line is always out the door.

I think of burritos as American food. But tasty...

Only because you have to already be drunk to eat a Taco Bell taco.

Re: Yet another way to punish Stanford in the rankings - Mick - 06-04-2015

I'd have to have a big, fat Bob Marley blunt before I'd eat a Taco Hell anything... (said the non-partaker)

Re: Yet another way to punish Stanford in the rankings - oman - 06-04-2015

Thread gave me an urge for something burrito-y, and today I had a tlayuda at a oaxacan dive.

It was made proper, ese, but they folded it over at the place I was at.

1) Start thread about food

2) Allow thread to give you urge to eat similar food

3) Work out that evening.

Dude, I hope that's going in. ???
