Clearly going to be a many-year rebuilding project.

It's gotta be REALLY bad for an athlete in a sport with limited prospects for any kind of lucrative professional career to go back on a 40-year decision...
How many softball players are on scholarship? Is it a full scholly sport?
Re: Softball player departs -
BobK - 06-06-2015
It's a partial Scholie sport. 12.0 total  The rosters have been high recently. Great coach ð³. We lose 7 thus far 1 transfer 6 Srs bring in 3 so maybe 16 next year.Â
It doesn't appear that we are rebuilding ðð

When the team splits in two over the last coach, the new coach is coming in has her hands full. My guess is Muir will give the coach at least a couple years to rebuild - he seems to have an abundance of patience with coaches :P

I think that is the way it plays out unless Hanson has really done something, or does something, egregious. Benching players for not shaking White's hand, etc. was probably not the way to handle things under the circumstance but won't get her fired.
It seems to me that the mass departures have created something close to a clean slate for Hanson. I wish her luck- she''ll need it.

Any player - or parent - who holds a grudge against a new coach because they liked the old coach needs to do some serious growing up. Hanson had NOTHING to do with what happened in the past. She simply got handed this fractured team. I think two more years is enough to start seeing some major improvement.

That and some other things mentioned in the Daily, such as the "family time" limit rule, make me worried about whether the new coach is capable of rebuilding a team. Contrast with WBB trying to schedule a game near each player's home at least once in her career, and the team often getting together for a meal with her family then, etc.

IIRC, that was a real problem in the first year Teevens was here. He had to deal with players whose loyalties were with T.W.
Not saying he would have been a smashing success without the problem, but it sure didn't help matters any.

TW acted like a jilted lover on his way out. I think he really wanted to stay, he just couldn't get the financial windfall that he desired. Stanford, IMHO, was his best employer situation. Perfect for him. Get into a few minor bowls, beat Ca.l every time, get into the Rose Bowl. At the time, fine for Stanford fans. Not now, of course, and the phoenix that ultimately arose has been beyond wonderful. But I do think TW acted like a pouty, scorned lover.

The sense I get is that the original Gang-of-Whatever PARENTS and players (highlighting the leaders), perceived preferential treatment. And what they wanted and have now received is preferential treatment
in favor of their children, based upon the unevenness of punishments meted out.Â
How easy it must be to recruit against Stanford softball. I genuinely don't care too much about it, but I do wonder about spill over effects. I wonder if the AD antics/softball fiasco have touched other sports.

Maybe we thought the situation was ideal for TW, but I don't think he did. He thought he was meant for bigger and better things; a larger stage, more national prestige, a place where he could compete for national championships on a regular basis. He thought ND afforded him all those opportunities. The additional compensation was important, but not the whole deal in itself.
Now if you want someone who left solely because he didn't get the financial windfall he desired, I believe Denny Green would be your man.

Why do you say that?
From the outside it seems that for an ambitious guy with NFL roots (Walsh disciple) who is broadly touted as an excellent candidate to become the second African-American NFL head coach, making the jump to one of the historically better NFL franchises seems like a no-brainer regardless of the financial windfalls.

OK, the way I remember it was that relations between Ted Leland and Denny had always been a little bit frosty because Denny marched to his own drummer. After his one successful season, Denny marched into Leland's office and demanded a big raise. When Leland demurred, Denny went out and shopped his resume. He got a offer from the Vikings and took it, commenting to the press on his way out that if Stanford wanted Rose Bowl teams they needed to stop paying Toilet Bowl salaries. That's what led me to believe that he left primarily because of compensation.

Keep in mind that Green's record was five seasons at Northwestern which was coming off setting the all-time D1 losing streak record when he took that job.
So having ANY season over .500 would have been considered a MAJOR accomplishment.

Thanks for the info. I did not know most of that story.
My only comment is that I wouldn't think NFL teams typically hire head coaches from the ranks of unsolicited resumes sent to them - and that coaches in Denny's position typically go when the NFL comes-a-callin.
