There were three of them in the 1970s when I was a teenager, and so I grew up thinking they were not particularly special.

Re: Triple Crown - OutsiderFan - 06-07-2015

I was six in when the last Triple Crown was won, but didn't pay attention to horse racing at all then, so I may as well not have been alive. That was my favorite sports moment since the Giants won the World Series in 2010.

Re: Triple Crown - CornFed - 06-07-2015

I attended the Kentucky Derby in the year of the last Triple Crown.  So, yes.  I had been born.

Re: Triple Crown - Mick - 06-07-2015

I was 10 when Secretariat won the Belmont by 31 lengths in 2:24.00

Re: Triple Crown - Spiny_Norman - 06-07-2015

There was actually a Stanford connection in the program at Belmont Park yesterday.

In the first race of the day, Japan beat Stanford (in the red silks, naturally).

Re: Triple Crown - terry - 06-07-2015

That's the second lengthy Triple Crown drought to end recently.

In baseball, Carl Yastrzemski won the Triple Crown in 1967, then there was no Triple Crown winner for 45 years, until Miguel Cabrera won it in 2012.

There hasn't been a Triple Crown winner in the National League for 78 years, since Joe Medwick won it in 1937.

Re: Triple Crown - dabigv13 - 06-07-2015

First time in my 5 years in New York that I didn't go to the Belmont, and I'm glad I didn't. The place is not set up to handle the ridiculous crowds on Triple Crown weekends. Last year felt like a zombie movie trying to get out of there, pressed up against massive fences, people on the edge of rioting, police everywhere trying to control the drunk masses. Not sure how it was this year, but nothing would've been worth that experience. Was really rooting against AP in the Preakness.

I wonder if the Belmont will still be a prime New York social event next year now that the TC drought is over.

Belmont took note of this and limited the crowd to 90,000 people, tops.  Last year's attendance was 102,199.

Yeah, I heard from people that went that it was a lot better this year. My PTSD would've prevented me from enjoying it in any case. Looking forward to Del Mar from here on out when this is never an issue  8)

Per ESPN:

Quote:$315,829 UNCLAIMED AFTER PHAROAH WINBelmont Stakes spokesman John Durso Jr. told ESPN's Darren Rovell that 94,128 $2 American-Pharoah-to-win tickets were bought at Belmont Park and Aqueduct Racetrack, but 90,237 of the $2 tickets, worth $3.50, went uncashed.

95% of winning $2 bet tickets went unclaimed! Even when the track loses, it wins. I suspect the sell these $2 tix precisely because they expect people to give up on cashing them in as the mob is heading for the door.

It's because they are worth more as collector's items.  They are going for about $25 on ebay.  Winning ticket and program going for about $80.
