We've been through this before, but... -

I think it's great that a former 2 star made defensive POY. Sort of a Cinderella story.
However, if we are looking for future defensive POY's, I believe they are more likely to come from the ranks of the 4-5 stars than they are from the 2-3 stars.
Recruiting is based on probabilities. Like most things in life, there are few if any can't misses.

Its a world turned upside down for some people when they value a star system (that is, basically, meaningless the moment a student-athlete signs his letter of intent and has to go onto the practice field with his college teammates), over actual accomplishments at the highest level of professional football, a level that a considerable number of 5* players never reach, even as bench warmers, much less POY award winners.

I hope that Shaw & Co don't put too much focus on the star system across the board and fall into the trap of that being the be-all and end-all. There are more Ben Gardner's (and many others) out there - plenty more.

Yes, but now Jim Harbaugh's dad is playing for the other team.

I'm certain they don't care about star ratings at all, only about their own evaluations of the players. Star ratings are for fan entertainment.

That doesn't really prove anything. If the question is, 'what should a coach use to evaluate recruits?', then yes, that's a fatal blow. But there's no one on this thread espousing that position.
If the question is, 'what's a good way for a fan to get a rough idea of what players/teams are good?' That proves nothing at all.
On the contrary, we know recruiting ratings are actually fairly good predictors of future success. We know your Alabamas and Ohio States get great recruiting classes and then convert that into dominance on the field. And we know that, per capita, four- and five-star players are much more likely to become All-Americans in college and then get drafted by the NFL. It's well-established by now.* On the other hand, if you prefer to indulge your availability biases, go right ahead.

Mr. car-guy, I would be curious to know what you think the antecedent of "this" is in your post.

It seems to me that this point doesn't refer to how Stanford's coaches evaluate players as much as it offers an opinion about the possibility that star ratings follow a herd mentality. Very well may be true, but I took WIM's point to be a serious effort to substantiate the fact that star ratings have actual predictive value. Truly I offer a mea culpa if my inquiry got your dander up. I only was playing with your handle as imitative flattery of your own efforts with WIM's handle.

CornFed's reading seems like the only reasonable one, particularly given that Ferrari began the thread with a plea to recruit 2-star players -- an implicit argument that recruiting rankings have little to negative predictive value. So if that's not the argument Ferrari was advancing, his real one was very well concealed.

How about a no star? Might not be an NFL star (he projects as an OG and offensive linemen do not receive much attention), but I see a diamond in the rough for the college level. Mean blocker and quick for 300+ lbs. He is camping with us this week.

Actually I said that.

I gather a post or two got deleted as I can't find where ferrari said that.

Another player who was relatively unknown until last month is Matthew Gutwald (OG) also a very mean blocker. Now listed as a 3-star recruit, he was a no star prior to several pac12 offers.

Both Gutwald and Witt would easily gain admission academically with a scholarship. I would suspect at least one of them walks out of camp this week with an offer. I have heard we are taking two interior lineman so there is room to offer both if other higher priority prospects do not materialize.

After performing very well at Stanford camp this past week particularly on the board drill, he earned a preferred walk-on spot.
