First secret crush -
Rally - 06-30-2015
Since we're apparently looking for serious things to discuss during the silly season (other than WBB) how about this? First crush. Age 8, would deny even in the face of torture and death, but I was in love with Annette and Darlene. Annette because of her sweet face and Darlene because of those strange protuberances on her chest. Well, there was also my teacher, Sister Rita, but even then I somehow understood the age difference would be a challenge. Plus she was a Nun and stuff.

Wow, this could get me in trouble.
I had a mammoth "older woman" thing. So:
Fourth grade, my brother's first grade teacher: Mrs. Allen
Sixth grade, my Cub Scout den mother: Mrs. Camp.
Eighth grade, my summer babysitter: Norma Weston
Somewhere in there, swear to God but almost hate to say it: Donna Reed
The first girl peer who sent me over the moon was Jane Delson, sophomore year of college. Janie, who was from Brentwood, was stunning, so much so that when my father's best friend Tom first saw her, he pulled me aside into another room and implored me, his face flush and his breaths hard, "Dear God Harry, you should wrap that woman in amber."Â
Audrey Hepburn was prettier than Janie, but not as striking.
Better than Cathleen Caballero? Yeah. As CC told me when she learned I considered the Greatest Dolly Ever, "Maybe not, just the one with hottest bod." Yes, that "thing" was several parts lust.
After Janie, everything savored of anticlimax. I've be charmed, but never quite breathless like that again.

A two parter:
Laura M. in first grade. I thought I felt "hungry" for her, didn't realize that was just early symptoms of crush-ness. Not sure whatever happened to her.
The first time I really recognized it for what it was, I was in fourth grade, 1972. The object of my affections was a cute, somewhat chunky blond girl named Cindy with a very unique last name. Fast forward 15 years, I was in my mid 20s and running marketing and sales for a local accounting firm. I received a call from a woman selling advertising with the exact same name, though now calling herself "Cynthia." Curiosity got the better of me and I agreed to hear the sales pitch. 15 years later, she was a dead ringer for Meg Ryan. Rowrrrrrr.

My second crush (not counting Sister Rita who I still believe wonders about me to this day) was a girl in 7th grade named Claudette. Her sensuous name may have had something to do with it but more likely the fact that she developed earlier than other girls in the class, her mother was late telling her to wear a bra, and she leaned over me one day in class and I got a look. I went immediately to confession, the priest made a strange noise than I am sure was just a coughing fit and told me to say 10 Hail Marys and go home and take a shower. Never saw her again.
I had 3 younger brothers who scrutinized my every move and a father who ridiculed any interest in girls so hid this until today. You guys are cheaper than therapy . . . And better :)

I'll call her "Mary". Fourth grade, Catholic school. Smart, great smile, great sense of humor. Kissed her on the cheek once or twice by the pencil sharpener. Sadly, we moved after that school year...
Fast forward. Fall of freshman year, thumbing through the Froshbook...and there she is. Screw up my courage, look her up in the campus directory, and call her. Nervous, sweaty palms, fearful.
"Mary? Um, did you go to grade school at St. Xxx?"
"Yeah...who is this?"
"Oh wow. You won't believe this, but I'm rastaman85. We end to school together first thru fourth grade! I...well..I um,..had the biggest crush on you."
"Hm. I don't remember a rastaman85"
"Sure you do! I was a tall, kinda nerdy Black kid (still am)...I kissed you by the pencil sharpener..."
"No, I didn't know anyone by that name or with that description. is this a joke? Bye," and she hung up.
It still stings a little.

When I was about 5 years old or so, Campbell's Soup used to run ads in Life Magazine and Time Magazine. They had this incredibly cute blonde girl that they used in some of the ads. I was smitten. I actually wrote letters to her with the assistance of my older brother and sister. They would then help address the letters to who knows where and put a stamp on the envelope. I don't think those letters ever made it out of the house, much less to the post office.
But every day I would check the mail to see if my little blonde goddess had received my letters and had written back to me. Eventually, I entered first grade and fell for another girl who looked remarkably like the Campbell's Soup girl. Same result - she didn't know, or acknowledge, that I existed.

Had a crush on the same girl from second through eighth grade, as did pretty much every other boy who went to school with us. Then I got to high school and looked around, and my eyes were opened.

Thanks for that, Ferrari. My favorite Mousketeeress was Cheryl. I checked her out on Wikipedia, only to learn that she unfortunately checked out age 64. She led a very interesting life, including dating Elvis (maybe they are in the same room?) and marrying one of the most interesting people of the 60's and 70's, Lance Reventlow. I never had a chance....

How about something somewhat related to sports? Like, who was your first favorite athlete? What was your first jersey?
Nobody is going to relate to "Sally Farmer when I was 8 years old."Â Maybe someone might relate to "Joe Morgan when I was 10."
Just a thought.

A lot of us, it seems, can relate to your "Sally Farmer," we just each have our own "Sally."
When I first arrived here I was confused and a bit put off by some of the wildly divergent tandums I encountered, but grew to appreciate them. Coffee, music and movies? What are they doing in a sports forum? This place is really like late night bull sessions in the dorms. Sure, we're all Stanford sports nuts but sooner or later someone is going to bring up graphene. Why not?

hah! No, for a variety of reasons, I prefer exotic, long, lean brunettes and Cynthia was a 5'2" perky blonde. Mrs. Mick is a 6' beauty of Croatian descent and I have been entirely besotted by her for 30 years.

Mick you are just about describing Mrs. Ferrari, a lean long-legged beauty I found 16 years earlier than you found yours. We are lucky men.

Cool, another all-purpose thread.
First favorite athlete: Walt Frazier (NY Knicks) No explanation. None.
First favorite local athlete: Floyd Little (Denver Broncos)
Athlete I most wanted to be: David "Skywalker" Thompson (Denver Nuggets)
My first secret crush was a girl in black tights on an Oscar Brand album cover. (Not creepy when you are the same age!) This soon morphed into a crush on the oft-mentioned Herb Alpert whipped cream girl, which then lead to secret crushes on some of the real women in my life, mostly very liberated elementary school teaches circa 1968-1974. My favorite was probably Miss Beatty because she wore miniskirts and taught us all the lyrics to
Tommy. I was crushed the day she showed up as Mrs. Keller.
It is always memorable when one first decides a crush will no longer be secret. For me that was Maureen M. in eighth grade. That crush was two years old when I told my father I was going to a dance to claim my soul mate. He laughed. "You don't dance." Mustering all the courage I could muster, I waited through most of the dance until what was sure to be the last slow song (I remember it in my head, but couldn't tell you the artist or title) and asked her to dance, which were the first words I ever spoke to her. She laughed. "I. Don't. Think. So." Abject humiliation complete. Oof, that day sucked.
Mrs. Jacketree loves to dance. I do not. "I don't get it, you used to dance when we first met." "Well, one does what one has to do."

Carrie Fisher as in Princess Leia. I remember how crestfallen I felt when I found out she married Paul Simon, meaning I had no chance. At that point (I must have been 8 ), I didn't know what divorce was and that there was still a chance however infinitesimally small.
The Princess Leia imprint may have instilled an attraction to women that Han Solo would describe as having "a lot of spirit".
First favorite athlete: Archie Griffin
First favorite local athlete: Kirk Herbstreit (some of you may remember my story about playing on his intramural basketball team)
Athlete I most wanted to be: Kirk Herbstreit

+1 on the tall Slavic brunettes; my wife is of part Serbian descent, and though not 6', long and lean apply. Her grandfather was a History professor specializing in East European studies at Stanford (
