U.S. wins world cup, Stanford a big reason why -

Press and O'Hara both chipped in important roles, and Ertz was at the final to watch his beau:

That being said, Julie was credited with an own goal. Thankfully, the US was up 4-1 at that point and moments later scored again to make it the final.
And the game was decided in the first 16 minutes, when 4 US goals more or less put the game out of reach.

Yep, Julie almost lost it for us....
Next cup's wish list -- natural turf and playing France in the final. I thought the French looked very good and they always have the cleanest kits.

Poor Kelley. Don't you hate when the gold confetti gets stuck on your butt?

The game was decided in the first 5 mins. Japan looked completely shell-shocked after the second goal and never recovered.

They recovered nicely and played some beautiful soccer in the second half, and with Johnson's own goal outscored us 2-1.Â
It was an exhibition for the last 60 minutes or so but at least their style made it enjoyable to watch.

I only got to watch a couple games, but both of them featured Johnson* making some seriously bone-headed plays that could've cost the US dearly. The maybe-should've-been-a-red-card foul against Germany and the own goal (which could've mattered had the US not scored a couple minutes later, being down 2 goals with 40 minutes on the clock is bad, but not nearly as bad as being down 3). By all accounts she played superbly otherwise, I just thought it was odd that I had heard so many good things about her then when I'm actually watching she goes and does that. Oh well.
*Incidentally, I've wanted to ask about this forever, what's with calling sportsmen by their last names but sportswomen by their first names? This seems extremely common and I find it weird.

Johnston was also the US defender that failed to stay with Ogimi, which led to Japan's first goal.Â

Has anyone ever, in any soccer match, seen a longer contested goal than Lloyd's third? I know sometimes at the end of games keepers come out on offense and there are sometimes open goals scored from a distance, but I've never seen a goal from midfield before. Reminded me a little of Curry's 60 foot shot.

Ask and ye shall receive. There are many YouTube videos for "long soccer goal".

Imagine if ZErtz and Johnston had kids. Could be even more athletic than the McCaffrey brood.

At Grantland, an appreciation of O'Hara by teammate Allison McCann:

Hadn't realized that Press had already chipped in with 21 goals. He's made 49 appearances, so she's got a very solid strike rate.
