Congratulations to the newest members of the Stanford Athletic HoF - Matt Gentry ’05 (wrestling), Alex Karakozoff ’77 (football), Ogonna Nnamani ’05 (women’s volleyball), Kyle Peterson ’97 (baseball), Nicole Powell ’04 (women’s basketball), Rick Schavone (diving head coach), Tara Kirk ’04 (women’s swimming) and Dana Sorensen ’04 (softball).

For those who watched Stanford football in the Jack Christensen era, tell me about Karakozoff.  I don't think he has received much ink in the stories about teams from that time.

I was also wondering about Karakozoff. Anybody have some stories to tell?

What are the rules about when a former player is eligible?  Hard to believe Nicole Powell was not already in the HOF unless this was the first year she was eligible.

Well, Oganna Nnami is in this year's class and she graduated one year after Powell.

Some HOFs make decisions based at least partially upon availability and attendance.  Perhaps Nicole had a conflict last year and is able to attend this year.  I doubt this is the sort of thing that gets publicized.

That could be because Volleyball is a fall sport and Basketball is a winter sport, so although Powell graduated a year before Nnami, they both played their last games in the same calendar year (2004).  If there is a 10-year wait before someone is eligible, and the nomination and voting process takes about a year... it could be that they both got in the soonest they would be eligible.

At least I hope so.  Both Nnami and Powell are worthy of first-ballot inductions.
