can it be attrition if transfer QB Vernon Adams never joined the team?

Maybe you can call it attrition by proxy.

Does anyone really think there's any chance Adams will fail the class? I'm sure Oregon put him in the easiest class possible (and I bet it's taught by an adjunct professor who can be fired on a whim if the university is displeased with him).

Strange that he can take the class at UO. Doesn't he have to graduate from EW before using the so-called graduate transfer rule? I suppose there's an explanation and it's all been pre-cleared with the NCAA...

If the guy hasn't been able to join Oregon's team for any kind of practices, it seems highly unlikely he'd be able to start after 2 or 3 weeks of practicing. Usually a new QB needs at least a whole Spring Practice and a Summer camp to be a starter when the season starts. It's unheard of for a QB to start after just 2 or 3 weeks of practicing with his team. In other words, at a certain point, Adams can no longer really be considered an option as Oregon's starting QB, even if he passes this class, right?

CompSci- At most state institutions you only have to complete the majority of your units on campus. So here at the U of A, a student can transfer in as many as 60 units, and take 63 units on campus or in our online programs to be awarded a degree from the university. It is not at all uncommon for a senior to walk at graduation in May and take 12 units in summer school at a JC or hometown school to finish the degree requirements.

I'm sure that taking the course at UO meets EW's requirements, for exactly the reasons you suggest. I'm a bit surprised, however, that the NCAA rules allow it.

This is what happened in the '70s under the Carter administration.

I'm not sure the NCAA has either the interest nor the jurisdiction to determine what courses a university can allow towards graduation.
They also cannot prescribe what geographic area a potential student athlete can inhabit.
They can, however, rule that the kid cannot practice with the team. And supposedly Helfrich has told him he cannot even informally work out with anyone on the team (at least so said Adams in an interview I cannot find right now).

from the article in the first post
Adams told SI.com via text message on Monday afternoon that hes been studying like crazy to pass his final class, and has spent the summer working out and throwing with his friends and roommates. He said the Oregon coaches told him he could not work out with his future teammates in any unofficial capacity

So, presumably his friends and roommates are not duckies.

Maybe he's taking an online class at EWU while physically being in Eugene?

CompSci87 has it. He's taking the class in Eugene online from Eastern Washington University, where there are many disgruntled types who resent his attempt to graduate and take his last year of eligibility at another school, like Brendan Scarlett is doing. So, it is no slam dunk.
In the spring, when he announced his intent to try his hand @ UO he was promptly banned from using any EWU athletic facilities since EWU is UO's opening game opponent this year. This in spite two fabulous years @ EWU where he was runner up for the Walter Payton award, the FCS version of the Voldemort.
So, yes he's been throwing to friends and roommates (some EWU graduates) all spring and summer. Even if he passes the course, it's unlikely that he'll be ready to play effectively vs Michigan State, but could well be up to speed by the time we get up to Eugene in mid November. Don't see how the Ducks losing to MSU in September does us or the Pac12 any favors.

That's not what the article linked above says. Specifically, it says "Adams is in Eugene and taking his final class on campus..." Of course, the article could be wrong.

Why the debate? All schools I know of, including Stanford, allow units and specific courses to transfer. I took freshman English in high school at the local JC and it transferred easily. (The classes, not the units; they gave me 2 qtrs and 6 units credit for my 2 semester, 5 unit courses. Pissed me off at the time.). A more interesting issue is why is it taking him so long? Is he repeating a failed class? I would think he would have handled this in the Spring, not summer. Whatever, must be a difficult class. After all, he has already been accepted into a graduate program at Oregon, right?

No news yet, but their is plenty of chatter on twitter asking the same question. The test started at 12:30 on Oregon's campus and results were expected to be known 90 minutes afterwards. Well, the idea was if he passed, he would head straight to football practice with his new team. No sign of him at practice yet with 15 minutes remaining.
Apparently, ESPN will be reporting the results on Sportscenter.

At least ESPN isn't hyping it.
