Seems to be the fate of our RB grads lately--look at Toby, Stepfan, Gaffney. Very disappointing. :'(

I wouldn't call Toby disappointing. He signed a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract last year.

Toby's making good money, no doubt, but I bet if you ask him, he'd say he is disappointed with his career so far. Given what he did in college, I hoped/expected more from him. And the flashes he showed in MN made me think he could make a go of it in Jacksonville. Hopefully his career gets back on track this year.

Toby's had some bad luck fall his way in terms of being drafted by a team with the best RB in the league and then signing with one of the worst rosters and worst-run teams in the league. He did seem to make the most of the opportunities he had with the Vikings, and I attribute last year to just playing for a god-awful team that couldn't do anything offensively against anyone.

I've been waiting for Toby to justify his Voldemort hype. He hasn't had the chance, it seems...yet.

Toby justified his "Voldemort hype" with 2,000+ yards of offense and 27 TDs. He has nothing to prove there. But he does need to justify his current contract or he'll find himself looking for a new gig at the end of this year. Hopefully Bortles makes a leap to alleviate pressure from the running game. And hopefully Toby's body holds up throughout the entire season. I don't think any of the rest of his contract is guaranteed.

I'm not sure I'd called Stepfan a disappointment yet, he's the backup in Arizona and has shown signs of being a capable NFL player, and I think will push Ellington for carries this year. Maybe my expectations are lower (5th round draft pick RBs don't typically become immediate starters, though).

One could argue being a disappointment in the NFL is a sign of a true Heismann winner. There have been quite a few over the last 10-20 years who have been average or worse in the NFL.

No justification needed beyond that season where he was clearly better than Ingram. Not like Ingram is lighting it up in the NFL either.

The Voldemort formula for a very long time usually picked the greatest impact college player on one of the top teams in the nation. That was one of the reasons cited when people choose Ingram over Gerhardt. Two years later though, they gave the award to RGIII who was playing on a team that finished strong with a mid-teens ranking over Andrew Luck who was playing on the top five team all year.
A great college career though does not necessarily mean they will prove to be equally as special in the NFL. There are several Voldemort winners who prove to be busts at the pro level. Here are a few recent ones:
Manziel - 2012 - QB Texas A&M drafted by Cleveland (too early to tell but not looking good - TBD)
Tim Tebow - 2007 QB Florida drafted by Denver and had one decent season with wins that were shouldered mostly by the defense. He bounced around the league, left the game for a year, and is now listed fourth on the depth chart for Philadelphia. He would probably be a better fit at tight-end but is unwilling to entertain the move.
Troy Smith - 2006 QB Ohio St was drafted by Baltimore and finished his NFL career in San Francisco during the 2010 season. He started six games that season, 52.6% comp rate 5 TD, 4 Int.
Jason White - 2003 QB Oklahoma went undrafted. Eventually was signed as a UDFA to Tennessee but quit football shortly thereafter.
Eric Crouch - 2001 QB Nebraska was drafted as a receiver by St. Louis. He was hurt during practice and left the team before playing a game. Starting in 2005 he played in various minor football leagues (NFL Europe, CFL, AAFL, and UFL).
Chris Weinke - 2000 QB Florida State was drafted by Carolina, played back up role and retired in 2007.
