NLRB rejects Northwestern players' union - terry - 08-17-2015

The NLRB unanimously rejected the petition by Northwestern players to unionize. The NLRB did not decide the issue of whether the players are employees. Rather, the NLRB decided that allowing a players' union at Northwestern would not promote stability in labor relations and would not further the purposes of the National Labor Relations Act. The NLRB was influenced by the fact that it lacks jurisdiction over public school football players, who make up the great majority of college football players. The NLRB said that allowing unionization at just one private school would not promote stability in labor relations.
