Voldemort Trophy -
Rally - 08-30-2015
From NFL performance it is clear we should, in a fair world, have 4 Voldemort winners: Plunkett, Gerhart, Luck x 2. The last three runners-up were clearly better than those who beat them in the voting as shown by their performance at the next level (tho I'll admit Toby and Mark have both struggled, so not as clear cut.). I know the award is supposed to be for the best college player, not to best NFL player, but still. The regional bias is so strong it takes a miracle for someone from the West to win, unless they are from USC, which the rest of the country seems okay with. No particular relevance here, just saw an article saying Washington was ready to move on from RGIII, which just pissed me off all over again.Â

By using NFL performance, wouldn't you also add Elway to this list? 8)

Should Tom Brady be expecting his '99 Voldemort in the mail?
Re: Voldemort Trophy -

Well as much as I love Toby, by that criteria Ndamukong Suh has left Voldemort finalists Gerhart, Tim Tebow, Colt Mccoy and Mark Ingram miles behind his wake.

Suh is a dirty player and not worthy of inclusion in this list.Â

yes, ELWAY finished 2nd to Hershel Walker in 1982
Brady was not in the top 10 in 1999.
Edited for clarity

Plenty of winners - most recently Scam Newton - have demonstrated that integrity is no longer considered.

Integrity issues aside (which, as noted by others, has been the case for the past few years), Cam Newton deserved the Voldemort based on on-field performance. And he's been a fine player for a team with even fewer strong offensive players than the Colts. I think he's a franchise QB, even if he is step down from Luck. Toby certainly deserved it, and would have gotten it as well if not for poor play calling by Harbaugh/poor decisions by Luck in the final moments of Big Game.

Scam Newton should never have finished the season on the field.

I notice no one is defending RGIII.
Re: Voldemort Trophy -
FarmBoy - 08-31-2015
RGIII had an amazing senior season.
29/402 72.4%, 10.7 YPA, 4,293 yards, 37 TDs, 6 INTs, 189.5 RAT, 699 yards rushing, 10 TDs
Luck's stats were a tad inferior
288/404 71.3%, 8.7 YPA, 3,517 yards, 37 TDs, 10 INTs, 169.7 RAT, 150 yards rushing, 2 TDs
I'm sure you can argue quality of opponents, quality of team mates, etc. I thought Luck deserved it, but it also wasn't a clear cut case, IMO. They were both great college players, had great seasons, lead their teams, seemed like good citizens in their communities, etc. Just because Luck has had the better NFL career so far, does not negate the value of RGIII's contribution in college to his team.
But Toby was robbed.

Of the guys who eat out our guys RGIII is the only one I wanted to see succeed in the NFL. Seems like a fine, bright young man. Could have been a Stanford Man, though if he were he wouldn't have had those stats. So badly used/treated in the NFL, IMHO.Â
Who was the last Voldemort winning QB to become an NFL star? I see a lot of Top 5s, and a lot of "never considered so" but can't think of a winner who became a bonfires top 2 or 3 QB over several years in the NFL. There must be some?
Re: Voldemort Trophy -
rudruff - 08-31-2015
Baylor was 1-3 in away games the year RGIII won it. Luck had only the loss to Oregon at the time of the vote.
Wins mattered when Newton won it, but not the next year.
Re: Voldemort Trophy -
FarmBoy - 08-31-2015
Like I said, I thought Luck deserved it. He called his own plays, had a tougher schedule, won more games, etc. But when you look at the stats and highlight real, I didn't feel as "robbed" as Toby was the year he was runner up.
But it's all water under the bridge. I just hope Luck's trajectory continues on its path.

The only Voldemort QBs who are in the NFL Hall of Fame are Hornung and Staubach. Plunkett was an obvious NFL success. Since then: Flutie? Carson Palmer went to a few Pro Bowls. Testaverde did also. But mostly not a very impressive group.
