Good stuff Hank.  I think the NU writer either underestimates Stanford's offense or overestimates NU's defense.  Can't see Stanford being held to 24.

Opening games of the season are always a bit dodgy, especially when a unit like the Stanford defense has to make so many changes.  I expect they will improve rapidly in the first half of the season as the coaches start to figure out who can really play on gameday (as opposed to just practices), and as the players begin to work more as a unit.

On the other hand, the Stanford O has almost no changes from the last three games of last year, so I think they might hit the ground running.  Maybe this game is a little higher scoring than expected, though I think Stanford wins in the end.

Shaw not tipping his playbook and maybe some early offensive rust could definitely make 24 pts happen.  But I'm in the 40+ pt camp...come out blazing early in the season and grab that national attention right away!

To me, the ideal strategy would be:

Game 1--fairly conservative, but crank up the tempo in the 2nd 1/2 if winning fairly easily
Game 2--turn the tempo up to 11, burn a few red shirts, give the 1st team some rest and 2nd team some experience in the 2nd half
Game 3--go back to the smash mouth philosophy and beat the s**t out of $C until Haden and/or Sark start crying
Rest of the Season--it will run increasingly smoothly all by itself

Might be within the realm of possibliity.
