I think he may be implying Stanford was arrogant. FWIW Fitzgerald is pretty salty about other academic schools at football, so I wouldn't take that comment totally seriously.

Here is a more extensive report of the press conference where Fitzgerald made that statement. It doesn't sound to me like he was saying anything at all about Stanford - it sounded to me like typical coach speak and wanting to send a message to his team to not get complacent. If I am reading anything between the lines, it's that his team was celebrating a bit too much after the game.

Most of his criticisms were against the NW offense, which indeed was not moving the ball easily on Stanford - but did manage the key plays we did not.

Ten to one he thinks Northwestern didn't look that good, because they didn't. He's trying to keep them from getting big heads over beating a good, ranked opponent by ten points. Probably looked more like they beat a terrible opponent that happened to be ranked.
Pretty sobering, frankly.
Better hope Stanford inexplicably just decided not to show up, because otherwise......

Most observers thought Stanford looked horrible and most observers were right. Watching the Ohio State - VA Tech game I saw Reese Davis credit Desmond Howard for "owning" his Stanford prediction. Howard said he was off that bandwagon, based primarily on reality. 'Hogan looks horrible.' Words to that effect.
