Will he or won\'t he, part deux - yvonne - 12-24-2010

Given the news in Wilner\'s column that Harbaugh hasn\'t even discussed the contract proposal and that Bowlsby "mispoke," have you changed your mind about his intentions.

I\'m on the fence. I had the feeling that the contract offer would be around $3 million, but it\'s incentive laden, and probably back-loaded. Michigan isn\'t going to come in and double his salary, but I don\'t think he\'s falling all over himself to get there.

Now, the NFL...

He\'s headed for the NFL.  Really nothing left to prove here.  I just hope it is the 49ers.

Grinch! :p

I had convinced myself that, as Mick says, Harbaugh had nothing left to prove in the college ranks, and the only thing to fear was the NFL.  (In fact, I had even convinced myself that he would stay at Stanford forever...)

But then I stumbled across an article written soon after his hiring.  Yes, a lot has changed since then, including the realization that a national championship is possible at Stanford, but this quote jumped out at me:
Quote:"Want to hear something kick ass?" Harbaugh said, sliding a CD into his computer.

For the next 20 minutes you both listen to Bo Schembechler\'s 1988 pregame speech for the Notre Dame game. Close friend Cam Cameron, now the Dolphins coach, recorded all of Bo\'s pre-game talks for the two years he was on the Michigan staff. Harbaugh was tabbed to make the transfer from tape to CD.

You let the crowd yell. Let Knute Rockne come down from the heavens. You let them all come. You remember, you are Michigan. Bo says, There is no greater tradition in college football today than the uniform that you wear.

"I always get chills up and down my spine," Harbaugh says.

I\'m a hopeless optimist, so I still feel like he\'ll stay, but that quote certainly makes me wonder.

I hope Bowlsby can find us a coach who thinks of Stanford as more than a stepping stone, someone who loves Stanford and wants to be there.

It\'s a Catch-22 type of situation - JohnR34231 - 12-26-2010

Anyone who has the football savvy, drive, and moxie to succeed at Stanford is likely to be the type of guy who wants to move on to a bigger stage once he has had some success here.

However, although I think JH will eventually end up in the NFL and/or Meechigan, I don\'t think he\'s in any big hurry to leave. I think we have a good shot at holding on to him for at least another couple of years.

Re: Will he or won\'t he, part deux - yvonne - 12-26-2010

I want a coach who won\'t be looking at the other sideline thinking, "If only I were at Notre Dame," "If only I were at Michigan."

I can\'t assure you that JH will never leave, Yvonne, but one thing I think I can assure you of is that he doesn\'t spend time on the sideline during a Stanford game thinking about where he\'d rather be.

Its always hard to read what is in Harbaugh\'s mind. To keep my sanity, I won\'t worry about Harbaugh until he makes his decision sometime in this off-season.

Successful stanford coaches will always... - Mick - 12-27-2010

...be attractive to NFL teams.  They will look at a record like Harbaugh\'s or Walsh\'s or Green\'s and look at the pro sets and the pro systems and the history of very strong assistants and they will say "Man!  If he could do that at Stanford, just imagine what he could do with NFL players!"

Think about it.  We\'ll never get the best players here, but we\'ll always get smart players and hopefully, usually get instinctive players...or the kind of players that tend to do well in the NFL.  Pretty good stepping stone, Stanford is.  And there will never be fan or media pressure...or praise...like there is at other schools.

I doubt you\'ll find a complete team in the NFL, from top to bottom, as intelligent as Stanford is.  Um, here\'s hoping for no penalty yards given up next week.
