In search of a better dram - Rally - 09-13-2015

We have heard from those of you who worship the bean, red until roasted, so carefully, then loving ground in special machines and imbued ínto pure water (although some would argue for a certain minerality to the water) but what about when coffee time is over, the work is done, the sun is setting and the time for reflection has begun?  Then is the time to go in search of the perfect dram.

Like many of you I have search through markets and stores, tastings at specialty bars, been instructed by masters, sampled spirits from America, Asia, continental Europe, okolehao in Hawaii, and the incomparable venues and subtleties of infinite locations in the motherland, but there is always another unexplored frontier in the discovery of usquebaugh.  Science is, ultimately, about the thirst for knowledge.

Consider this.  Only $2200.00.  Small, but does come with a white glove cleaning kit.  You know, for helping around the house.

My people supposedly now make the best whisky in the world.  I haven't had it so I can't personally confirm.

Great!  You can be my second.  I choose Publius' place as the venue.  They have the choice of vessel.

Re: In search of a better dram - BostonCard - 09-14-2015

Apropos this thread... does anyone have any good Scotch recommendations?  I am looking for something approachable and reasonably priced.

Obama.  Or Old Sheepshead or Pignose.  Trust me.  All at BevMo.

Moderate:
Black Grouse (blend)
Bowmore Legend
Glenfiddich
Glenmorangie
Isle of Skye
Monkey Shoulder
Pig's Nose
Glen Moray

Little more expensive (mostly single malt)
Laphroiag, if (like me) you like smoky scotch.
Lagavulin
Scapa
Tomintoul
Highland Park
Glengoyne
Glenrothes
Dalwhinnie
Balvenie
Aberlour
Redbreast

Re: In search of a better dram - dabigv13 - 09-14-2015

Single malt? All depends on how much peat you like. In terms of stuff you can find easily and at a reasonable price, Lagavulin 16 is my favorite but I like peaty. Laphroaig quarter cask also very tasty and peaty. Reasonable, quality, and less peaty, I think the Balvenie Doublewood is a good value. Quality, and approachable if the really smokey stuff turns you off.

If your definition of reasonable is around $85.00 I recommend Highland Park 12 year or Oban 14 year.  Prices at BevMo.

I enjoy Pig Nose.  I find it interesting that the master blender considers Pig Nose a "daytime whiskey" preferring his Sheep Dip blend in the evening.  Wherever you live it's 5 o'clock somewhere.
