Re: A grinding win over Yale - Farm93 - 12-29-2010

Clearly Yale is not that good, so I can only conclude that Stanford is only slightly better.  That team that lost to Oklahoma State just does not seem to come to Maples.

The offense is really boring.  In many cases two or three guards play catch outside the three point line.  While the one guard dribbles away for 4-8 seconds looking as cool as possible, 3 - 4 other guys stand around.  At some point another guard runs up to catch the ball near half court and the cycle is repeated until there are 15 seconds left on the play clock.  At that point the ball is given to one guy who then displays his best one on one skills.  The result is either a contested 2 point shot or a contested 3 point shot.

The task of scoring is made even more difficult because Mann is definitely not an option, so the defense is literally playing 5 on 4.  With that advantage no one is really open, and offensive rebounds are almost impossible for Stanford.

That said Mann actually took and made a three point shot from the wing!  It was stunning.   I think the whole team was stunned, and that is why no one that circled back to defend with any urgency.  The result?  A Yale player got an outlet pass, raced up the court for a lay-up and was fouled.  An old school 3 point play.

The only reason the season will not be full of misery is because the Pac-10 is probably only the sixth or seventh best conference.  Amazingly, there are Pac-10 teams that have looked less impressive.

Excellent summary, Farm93.  Sadly, I couldn\'t agree more, on all fronts.
