Women's Water Polo NC: Stanford 9; U$C 10 in 5 OT - M T - 05-12-2013

Or at least momentarily.  Stanford vs USC.
Find the link at
  http://www.ncaa.com/liveschedule/2013/05/12
(The "5:45 PM" (EDT) should change to a link when the broadcast starts)

Stanford lead the first 3 quarters by 1,2, or 3 goals.
U$C got their first tie since the start at 1:52 left and went ahead at 0:45.  Stanford tied it at 0:12.
(Two OTs @ 3min; then sudden death @ 3min per period)

Water polo is an exhausting game.  The players must be dragging badly at this time.  Easy to be lazy; but the officials aren't calling anything.

The players are really dragging.  Both teams are hoping for 6 on 5.  Backhands will likely not be effective.  Watch for a front-facing shot.

The winning goal was in the 3rd sudden death OT on a immediate shot after a ordinary foul from about 10 meters.

Stanford up 6 - 5 after Three - pauloalto - 05-12-2013

Still playing good defense  ...

6-5 at the end of three periods (four total, 9 min each).

I'm in my Worcester hotel room delaying my return to Boston in order to watch this...

Re: Women's Water Polo NC on web now: 3rd Q: Stanford 6; U$C 5 - fullmetal - 05-12-2013

$C ties it up at 6 with a 12 meter shot from long-range that somehow skipped under the goalkeeper's arms...and then $C goes ahead on a power play with 45 sec left.  Stanford's last few offensive possessions have looked tentative, with one of the more recent ones resulting in Maggie Steffens losing the ball to a steal.  45 sec to tie it up...

Re: Women's Water Polo NC on web now: 3rd Q: Stanford 6; U$C 5 - fullmetal - 05-12-2013

Stanford ties it on a second chance during a power play!

Re: Women's Water Polo NC on web now: 3rd Q: Stanford 6; U$C 5 - fullmetal - 05-12-2013

With 12 sec left, U$C drives and doesn't score--Stanford can't do anything in 3 sec, and we're into overtime.

Wow, after USC scored that goal with 45 seconds left and then Stanford failed to score I assumed it was over and stopped watching. Bad decision apparently. Glad Stanford got some mojo back, the team seemed so deflated after that 12-meter goal to tie it.

Re: Women's Water Polo NC on web now: after OT: still tied Stanford 9; U$C 9 - Spiny_Norman - 05-12-2013

Still tied 9-9 after two 3 minute OT periods.  Teams now play golden goal - next score wins.

So many OTs!

It was entertaining, but....

Damn.  Tough way to lose.  5OT.

:(  Tough battle to lose, this sudden death business.

So close.....  Maybe we'd have pulled it out with even just one more fan in the crowd, whose cheers and cat calls might have convinced the officials to change their calls slightly.  If I could only think of one more person who could have been there.... Maybe only as little as a 45 mile trip for someone...

Anticipating fullmetal flaking out, I brought my mom as a mother's day "treat." She has been good luck at Stanford games in the past, joining me at the Oregon football game in '09 and the men's volleyball NCAA championship match in '09 (?) I guess I need a new lucky charm.

It was a lot of fun to watch live. It's a real battle in the water. Take no prisoners. As an non-expert, I must say, it seemed like Stanford relied on great plays by individual stars more than US.C, which seemed to have a more cohesive team strategy. The contrast in styles of the coaches was also interesting. The Stanford coach seemed very laid back while  the US.C coach was very intense.

Congrats to the ladies on their successful season.

Crap. I hate it when the good guys/gals lose to the toejams...

Re: Women's Water Polo NC: Stanford 9; U$C 10 in 5 OT - fullmetal - 05-12-2013

I wasn't done with regatta business until maybe 5:45PM or so...and I thought the game would have been over by the time I got back to Boston, so I started watching the online feed.  As the overtimes started piling up though, I realized that had I jumped in the car and zoomed to Blodgett Pool, I could have made it for the last couple of overtimes.  Aye.  Instead, I watched the U$C coach cavort in the pool with a host of international water polo talent. :(

And so our NC streak dies barring an improbable run in Baseball or Men's Golf.

Reading through the commentary here and thinking through several other 1 NC years where the single NC had similar drama (but fell our way) I realized how fragile is such a streak.

I love Stanford's commitment to its full NCAA suite of varsity sports as do most on this board.  If the streak dies will a new one start next year?  You could read this season either way - top 10 showings in many sports but weakness in some of the same sports that drove our streak (Women's tennis, Women's swimming, etc).

So .... Is the Water Polo 5 OT loss the gasping canary in the Stanford "Sears Sports" coal mine?

I think what you meant to say was "barring an improbable run in Softball or Women's Golf", right?

Unfortunately, for some reason, the men's golf team just did a faceplant [or the golf equivalent thereof...perhaps they "pulled a Sergio"] in the third round of the Regional to finish NOT in the top five.  Their season is over.  The women, at least, played their worst round first and then turned in two great rounds to advance to the NCAA championships.

As for baseball/softball, it appears the men are a long-shot just to make post-season [there being no baseball equivalent of the NIT, this team's eerie resemblance to the men's basketball team may end a little sooner], while the women won yesterday but, as I type, are getting shellacked by Nebraska in Game 2 of their sub-regional.

Still, numerous posters have assured us that the Director's Cup is in the bag, so at least we've got that going for us...right?  ???

We have to make up 12 points, and Michigan is still in the softball tournament.
