I find this thread interesting, but can we all agree to put some sort of meaningful title when starting a new one? "Has anyone posted this yet?" Isn't helpful. And yes, I have been guilty in the past as well but I swear, Your Honor, I have reformed and am a new man!

Nicely played, Yvonne.
Scarlett's official announcement will be coming soon. This is now being reported by the Ca.l Rivals site publisher.

As I read the graduate transfer rule, kal had to either deny Scarlett financial aid or had to consent to Scarlett's transfer. Same with Stanford for all the guys transferring, including Lyons. If accurate, I would expect schools to deny waivers more often. What is the upside to consenting to lose someone who's anticipated to contribute?

The upside is they are also students who have or about to graduate and go to Grad school.Â

Think of the down side of making a student stay who has fulfilled their academic requirements in good standing and now clearly wants to go somewhere else. What you likely end up with is someone who is likely disgruntled and resentful at being denied an opportunity to go somewhere else to pursue their future. Teammates surrounding that player have to start questioning: are the coaches really looking out for my best interest? or are they just going to force me to stay against my wishes? And will you even get the player's best performance on the field if he is truly disgruntled?Â

Well, like in the Scarlett/Lyons cases, for every one you lose, you might gain one as well. It's usually best to allow people to be where they want to be, or in the relationship they want.Â
Graduate school is a different admissions animal than undergrad. I'm curious if it may be easier to get into Stanford as a grad student than undergrad in some cases.

I'm sure it varies by school. But you also have to define "easier". They may have higher admission rates, but I we venture at the grad school level, you don't have as many people filling out 10+ applications as seems to be the norm for undergrad these days.
My wife's grad program at Harvard had something like a 40+% acceptance rate, but all of the candidates were highly qualified for the program and there was a lot more self selection going on.

Quote:Denying waivers is also terrible PR.
It would still surprise me if a coach allowed a player to transfer to a conference foe, let alone your arch-rival. I wouldn't be surprised if, nay, I would anticipate, C'al players would laud their coach for barring a transfer to Stanford. I don't think there'd be that much PR backlash in telling a player they have to at least choose a school outside the Pac12 unless there's a truly compelling human interest side to the story (an no, I don't think playing on the same team as your brother quite meets that bar).
But I'll be more than happy to be the beneficiary if Scarlett ends up fulfilling his potential on the Farm.

SD's statement about Scarlett is here:Â http://www.mercurynews.com/sports/ci_276...um=twitter
Other players or potential recruits could not read this statement and conclude the coach cares about the player.Â
Shaw's statement about Lyons (I'm happy for him) seems more consistent with Bobk's reason for granting a waiver.

While I think SD comes across as petulant, he's playing to his fanbase in being terse about Scarlett leaving. Seriously, he's going to play for a direct rival. I don't think many coaches would be happy about it and a lot of fans would be pissed. Of course, it behooves a coach to at least appear above the fray, but who wouldn't be upset at a player going to the other side of the field for Big Game? It's a pretty big indictment of your program.

The issue isn't whether he can go to another school, but whether he can receive an athletic scholarship from that school.

Well, in a strange way, Dykes agrees with you. The player is gone, so hence he doesn't know or care what the player does next.
The effect of requiring waivers athletic scholarships for student athletes who have graduated is the same, but I suspect that such waivers won't be allowed long in light of recent moves to give players more control (i.e. suits by Northwester, O'Bannon, etc.)

I really thought that in the case of a graduating player going to a different school all that was needed was the new school to offer a graduate program that the old school didn't, something that should be pretty trivial to fulfill unless the player in question really wants a degree everyone offers. I thought that, in that case, at least, the former school had literally no say at all in it.
I admittedly haven't been following this too closely since my computer died on Saturday so I haven't really had the computer time to look at these forums until today.

Now the plot thickens. Does Ca.l go through all the hoops Scarlett needs them to in order for him to enroll at Stanford?Â
I agree with Garvin that calling it a transfer is misguided. The guy will graduate in May and has another year of eligibility remaining. He should be able to enroll wherever he has been accepted to grad school and get on scholarship at that school to use his remaining year of eligibility. Ca.l shouldn't have any role in his graduate school destination whatsoever.Â
