As I understand the calculation, this already includes 45 for men's golf, 25 for baseball, and 73 for softball.  That means that UCLA would get an additional 157 points for the highly improbable feat of winning national championships in all three of those three sports.  That still leaves a deficit of 74 points.

T&F is a very predictable sport.  Occasionally an 8th ranked sprinter will win a final and every once and a while an elite athlete or two will combine to win 3 or more events earning just enough points to get a team title.  However, UCLA's teams do not have enough elite athletes capable of winning events to win the national meet over squads with a dozen or more elite athletes.  The people UCLA can send to the T&F championships are not winning two NCAA team titles will not happen.

Oregon, the SEC's best and teams from Texas will probably battle for the title.  It is possible USC gets into the top 5, but UCLA really has no chance. 

This is like a baseball team up by 25 games with 27 left to play.  Their magic number may be 3, but the thing is OVER.  Oh and BTW realistically Stanford has a better chance to win T&F team title and that also is not going to happen.

Yeah, OK. I'm getting old. I realize that.

In fairness, I had to check UCLA's track page because I also remember when UCLA had a contending track program.  However, even if they won a team title 4 years ago, the reality is the people on the squad today are not going to get UCLA into the top 10 in Eugene.

Golf really allows lower ranked teams to win the day on the right course with the right weather, etc.  Track is more consistent.  If 5 or 6 athletes have run sub 10.4 in the 100m multiple times in a season, I don't care how confident the guy with a PB at 10.7 is going into the meet.  He will not win that race.  He may get another personal best running against the best, but he will not win that race.

And for UCLA to finish in the top 10 in Eugene they will need 8 or 9 miracle workers.  And if they did uncover that many miracle results, members of the IAAF would likely ask for a few pints of blood.

That said UCLA is sending 32 athletes to the regional, so they have enough athletes to win.  They just lack the PBs to be credible, and their best athletes are in the events least likely to produce big upsets.

I just hope UCLA stays at 112 this spring.
