He should not have been admitted to the B-School.  If that's what he wanted and Anderson gave him that option...sham(e) on them.  Now if he had the grades and he had the Scarlett route open, great. 

I'm fine with our academic standards.  We will lose some recruits, but I would rather have that than admit the Bush or FSU QB that brings down the integrity of the program.    We are different and we should be glad for that fact.  Lack of institutional control is no way to go through life!

My recollection is that B school really wants its applicants to have some work experience first.

They're getting a little more lenient these days.

I was accepted as a senior in '13 to the GSB on a 3 year deferral.  So they accepted me when all I had was some summer internship experience, but they wanted me to get 3 years of real work experience before starting (finally starting this fall!).

I also had two other friends from undergrad get accepted as seniors, but they didn't do any deferrals.  They started their MBA1 year right after senior year.  But they're also both doing dual degrees (MS in CS), so they're a little bit of a weird case. 

In my experience talking to current/former GSBers though, 99% recommend getting a couple years of real work experience before starting because it gives you some insight/background into the cases you'll discuss in class.  They also noted that if someone in class without any experience was sharing their opinion, they'd take it with a grain of salt. 

Even from a social aspect, it makes sense to get work experience first.  It's probably easier to make friends with 25-27 year olds if you're also 25-27, and not 22.

I played rugby in 1968 at Harvard Business School with Wilson Whineray, who was a a year ahead of me and a former All-Black Captain.  He didn't find it difficult juggling case studies and rugby balls....

Yes; Business School is as much about contacts and networking as it is about lectures and someone without work experience doesn't bring as much to the table as someone who has been out there in the real world.  That being said, he could have gotten a Masters in Management Science and Engineering from the School of Engineering if he wanted to develop some skills useful in business.  I think that's ehat Scarlett did.

My understanding is that this wasn't an option for him because by the time Stanford entered into the picture, the deadline for the MS&E program had already passed. I believe the only master's program that would've been a realistic option for him at the time of his decision was Statistics.
