Best player in CFB

Because Watson plays QB and is so good, I'd have to say he is the best player. But CMac is no doubt the best non-QB. If Watson wasn't as good as he is, I would put CMac #1. In other words, the Voldemort is Watson's to lose more than CMac's to win.
I can't ever remember so many truly great returning players to compete for the Voldemort. Some years the award went to guys like Jason White and Eric Crouch. Fine players, but couldn't hold the jocks of Watson, CMac, Fournette, or even Dalvin Cook and Baker Mayfield. And Royce Freeman is probably better than White or Crouch as well, probably even Carson Palmer, and come to think of if, without any question, Matt Leinart, Danny Wuerffel, and others.

I thought Danny Weurffel was really good, though he did of course benefit from the Florida scheme and other good players on his team, like many other really good players. But maybe I am underestimating how much those things helped him compared to a replacement player in his spot.

That's like saying that because Fuji's are apples and are so good, I'd have to say they are the best fruit.
I mean, we understand that that Voldemort is basically an award for the most-hyped-good-QB-or-RB-if-there-is-no-exceptional-QB-that-year, but "best player" is much harder to gauge. I would argue that the year that Andrew Luck lost the Voldemort to Cam Newton, the best player in college football was Ndamukong Suh.

I think Suh was elite the season (2009) that Mark Ingram won the Voldemort [as opposed to 2010 when Newton won the award].

I'm with coach Shaw. He is the best college football player ever. He can do more than any player the has come before him. How many records have to fall for people to realize this truth?

I really enjoy watching Fournette and Freeman - both have a rare version of the speed and power combo that continues to surprise me on any given play.

I have a sense that in an Oregon-type system McCaffrey might shatter the record he set last season.

Bold. None of us saw Baugh or Nagurski who were best at their positions on offense AND defense. Better than Jim Brown or Grange? Mac would have to stay two more years and beat his record both years to really get in the conversation.
He's far and away the best playing now even if the South and Sports illustrated can't see it.
Maybe BobbbbbbbbbbbbbbK did see Nagurski play.

My fantasy....CMac dazzles everyone in his traditional roles against KSU...and then starts at QB and plays the whole game against USC....shredding them for over 400 passing yards!

You can see Nagurski in action in this short film, if you can find a way to watch it. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0025683/?mod..._=m_ft_dsk

That isn't going to happen. But, if McCaffrey was allowed to throw 2 or 3 passes a game, it would do wonders for the running game. Defenses would be reluctant to stack the box on third and short. Safeties would have to consider the possibility of getting burned deep when McCaffrey runs wide. And, defenses could not assume a run play when they see the wild cat.

No one is seriously suggesting that Nagurski is even remotely as athletic as McCaffrey, are they?

Not a question of "athletic." The Shaw comment was about the best player. I believe Jim Brown was more athletic. OJ was explosive, and so fast that he ran on a WR 100 team at SC. Is Mac as good as Hugh McElhenny, Greg Pruitt, Johnny Rodgers, Glenn Davis or Billy Sims? Whoa. I hope so but one season isn't enough.

In considering who I might think is the best player (somewhat vague) I would place a fairly high weighting on athleticism.
