Looks like Grace Luczak failed to medal, as GBR won the Women's Pair, with NZL getting the Silver and DEN the Bronze. Bummer.

Brutal finish as the US women are eliminated in soccer and Christen Press skied the US's final penalty kick in the shootout. Hate to see it come down to penalties.

Sweden's goal at the end of extra time should definitely have counted.
Carli Lloyd's goal right before that perhaps should have counted, it was never clarified whether she was ruled offside (which would have been an incorrect call) or called for a foul (which is a judgment call, obviously, but probably correct).

More on Luczak and her race when I get to see the race...disappointing given that the pair was in contention for the first half of the race. Seems like they faded or encountered adverse conditions :-[

I am not sure there is any correlation between attending college and world-level athletic performance falling off, but it does show up occasionally. Michelle Wie attended college and never regained her form as a teenage golfer. Both Franklin and Wie had plenty of time after leaving school to get back on track but neither were able to recover. Of course the vast majority of athletes do continue to progress during their college years. Any explanation about Wie and Franklin or are they the exceptions that prove the rule?

WOW! Maya DiRado with an incredible last 25 meters for a massive upset in the 200 back. Looked like she had no chance.

Just saw DiRado's gold medal swim on west coast prime time show. Watching her beat the $C swimmer with the final glide into the wall really made my day.
Ledecky is spectacular but not as surprising, more surreal. All the other swimmers were still in the middle of the pool when she touched. It was like watching a local kids swim meat where the one serious swimmer turns around to watch the other swimmers for a while.

For all you BBC luvvies out there, they said (once that they had discovered her) that Katie was going to "The University of Stanford", and today that DiRado would be swimming for the same "club" as Ledecky in the fall.

It's not clear that Franklin's problems were associated with being in University. She has had some injury troubles, but as recently as last summer, just after she completed her last semester at berkelee, she won a silver medal in the 200 back in the world championships and golds on the A team of the relays. And in her last NCAA championships ( a very high level meet - note how many of the swimmers from other countries attend US colleges) she won three individual titles: 200 yard back, 200 free, 200 IM.
Leaving college and turning pro seems to have coincided with her more severe troubles. That may be coincidence, but there are a few articles out there saying she overdid the endorsements for awhile.
