Yeah, I would assume that a decision would have to be made by the end of spring ball so if Chryst is not the guy he can go somewhere else to play as a graduate transfer.

This assumes we don't experience another mid-season shift a la 2012. I wouldn't carve it in stone that Burns will play out the year as the starter.

You are prophetic (and correct) regarding the need for a capable backup. Look at the way the Oregon offense dropped off last year in efficiency once Lockie entered games that Adams Jr. had to leave due to injury. It wasn't pretty and the Duck fans I know (whether fair or not) despise Lockie as a starting QB.Â
I am confident if Christ came in the Cardinal offense would not sputter.

QB injuries are common. Look at Kansas St last year. They lost their starting QB in the first quarter of the first game of the season. Then they soon lost their 2nd string QB. Chryst still has a brobdingnagian chance to still win the job or to see time due to Burns getting injured (not that I hope Burns gets injured.)

Now Shaw's comments about taking a break were at least somewhat disingenuous, as during both years he did not sign a QB he made at least some effort to do so. Nevertheless, he seems to have followed the rule about only offering one at a time and one can see that if you do have a successful run of signing very high profile QBs you will end up with a logjam.

What qualifies Chryst as a "dedicated local"? He grew up in San Diego and Phoenix, attended high school in North Carolina for two years (when his father coached with the Panthers) and then two years at Paly while his father coached with the 49ers. Now his father has been fired by the 49ers and will surely move to wherever his next job takes him, meaning that Keller will have no immediate family in the area.
There's no reason for Chryst to transfer immediately, but down the road it could make sense for him (especially as a grad transfer) depending on how things develop, and there's no evidence that his minimal local ties will be a factor in his decision.
