Targeting....

Thanks BC, I assumed Shaw would not just let this die. He "vehemently objected" when Sam Ponder asked him about the non-call, and said "next question" when asked post game, but he'll press this issue because it involves player safety.
I don't think Shaw needs a bunch of (justifiably) unhinged Stanford fans running interference with the league.
Four years ago we received a welcome letter from Navy Sprint Football when my son made the team as a Plebe. One of the benefits listed was that it helps prepare them for combat. Take that for what it's worth.Â
NB: I asked him about concussions. He doesn't think he had any in games or practice over 8 years of playing. "Maybe one little one." I've only been concussed once, but never lost consciousness. Non-sports injury.
There does seem to be a dark day of reckoning on the horizon, but I keep lapping this (football) up.

Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working .I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work. Peter Gibbons

I think the Pac-12 league office has an obligation to the players, coaches, and fans, to make a clear and unambiguous statement about its position on the Owusu hit.
Not only does the Pac-12 enable head hits when its officials don't rule targeting on hits like the one on Owusu, it exacerbates the situation by failing to inform ball carriers that they need to protect themselves from being hit like this, because it won't be called a penalty. Maybe if Owusu knew he could be hit like this without penalty to the defense, he might have made sure to duck or start going down to avoid it.Â

Shaw's pressing the issue. That the PAC-12 still has not commented is damning.
The happiest news in the article is that Chris Owusu is planning to go to medical school. He will do better for himself and the world. #40yeardecision.

My feeling at the end of the game has not changed after I imposed a cooling-off period on myself. The on-field crew should be suspended for a week. The replay crew should be done for the year.

There should definitely be some punishment, but I don't know if the Pac-12 has enough crews to actually do that.

Where's GlassesRef when you need him? I think he called Ed Reynolds once for targeting.

I once had Larry Scott's email address, but apparently lost it. Anyone have it? Scott certainly needs to see that jarring image of Owusu being hit in the head. He needs to hear from fans about this. The conference needs to make a statement and take action on it.Â
If I was a defensive player and saw this kind of hit is allowed, I would absolutely be planning similar hits for future games I play in. IOW, it is a clear and present danger for players playing in future games, for this kind of stuff to be allowed without penalty or suspension.Â
Given Stanford and Washington play on Friday night, the conference owes it to act post-haste and clarify what the rules are for hits to the head. Otherwise, Stanford and Washington players will be at risk. This isn't an issue that can wait until some off-season rules committee review. It needs to be acted on NOW.

Got to wondering if this player has previous experience with targeting:

Ultimately Mora is responsible. He's on the record being OK with penalties because the lack thereof means his team isn't aggressive enough. I don't think he put bounties on players. He's not that stupid. He probably challenged his team to man up and not play like the wusses that lost 8 in a row. He created the climate that implicitly encouraged his players to injure Stanford. He knew what he was doing.
